With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.
This Assistant Civil Engineer position is part of the Department of Public Works Transportation Division, Traffic Safety Response Team. This team is responsible for deploying quick-build countermeasures at high-injury locations and coordinating closely with the Police Department on collision investigations, data analysis, and safety recommendations. The Assistant Civil Engineer is a mission-critical technical role that directly enables project delivery. These positions perform the design, drafting, field verification, and technical analysis required to move projects from concept to implementation on accelerated timelines.
The Transportation Assistant Civil Engineer will support the City’s Transportation Division – Safety Response Team working on planning, development, prioritization, design and construction of “quick build” roadway safety improvements. This position will work directly with City traffic investigators and engineers to deliver quick build safety improvements at various locations throughout the City.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have knowledge of, or interest in, traffic safety principles and traffic control features, familiarity with the CA MUTCD and related guidance, and bicycle and pedestrian safety features as well as AutoCAD. Strong written and verbal communication skills and a customer service mindset are essential in the ideal candidate, as project work often originates from public concerns and requires direct interaction with customers.
Overall, the role requires a blend of technical capabilities, responsiveness, and effective communication.
To perform professional civil engineering work in the planning, design, technical investigation, and construction of projects in the areas of public works, transportation, hydraulics, and structural engineering.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsAssistant Civil Engineer
This is the journey level class in the professional civil engineering series not requiring registration. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Junior Engineer. Incumbents of this class perform the moderately difficult professional engineering work in civil engineering. Assistant Civil Engineers are normally considered to be of a continuing training status and as assigned responsibilities and breadth of knowledge increase with experience, and registration is received, may reasonably expect their positions to be reassigned to the next higher class of Associate Civil Engineer.
Associate Civil Engineer
This is the full journey level class in the civil engineering series requiring registration. Positions in the class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Assistant Civil Engineer, or, when filled from the outside, require prior advanced professional civil engineering work experience. An Associate Civil Engineer works under general supervision and is expected to complete complex civil engineering assignments requiring the use of judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies, and determining work assignments.
Work in this class is distinguished from that of the Assistant Civil Engineer class by the greater complexity of the assignments received and by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate.
Direction is provided by a higher level professional engineer or a division head level position. Responsibilities of an Associate Civil Engineer may include the direct or indirect supervision of lower level professional engineers and technical personnel.
