Position: Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer (REMOTE)

Mechanical & Controls Commissioning Engineer – Data Centers & Mission Critical Projects

This role in JLL’s Data Center Commissioning Group focuses on leading mechanical and controls commissioning for data center projects ranging from 1MW to 100MW+.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed commissioning proposals and scope documents based on client RFPs, design drawings, and specifications; lead pre‑commissioning planning sessions with stakeholders.
  • Manage and perform holistic factory and onsite commissioning activities (Level0–Level6) for mechanical and control systems infrastructure.
  • Execute comprehensive commissioning of mission‑critical systems including CRAH units, chilled water plants, central cooling plants, dry coolers, liquid cooling systems, advanced server rack containment strategies, and associated controls and monitoring systems.
  • Develop system‑specific functional performance tests and integrated systems testing protocols that meet industry standards (ASHRAE Guideline0 or similar).
  • Create commissioning plans, test procedures, and comprehensive final reports, documenting deficiencies and overseeing resolution through substantial completion.
  • Direct cross‑functional commissioning teams of 2–8+ engineers and technicians, coordinating with project stakeholders from design to operation transition.
  • Conduct commissioning training for owner’s operations staff and provide knowledge transfer documentation on larger projects.
  • Manage commissioning schedules, ensuring optimal team utilisation, identify potential failure modes, and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Interpret project drawings and specifications, identify design issues, and communicate technical concerns to clients and project teams.
Required Experience & Technical Skills
  • Minimum 7years documented experience leading hands‑on data center commissioning activities, with at least 5years specifically in data center cooling systems and building monitoring and automation commissioning.
  • Proven track record leading mechanical and controls commissioning of facilities with power densities exceeding 25kW per rack.
  • Deep understanding of cooling plant sequences of operations, redundancy concepts, and their implementation in mission‑critical designs.
  • Experience partnering with major cooling equipment manufacturers (JCI, Daikin, Trane, Vertiv, Schneider, etc.).
  • Proficiency in commissioning management software platforms (CxAlloy, ACC, Procore, Bluebeam, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of commissioning processes for data center cooling infrastructure and building monitoring and controls platforms.
  • Expertise in precision HVAC systems, glycol cooling, thermal management strategies including liquid cooling applications.
  • Strong understanding of BAS/DCIM integration, monitoring protocols, and alarm management protocols.
  • Ability to travel 50% annually throughout North America, work in active construction environments, climb ladders, and work in mechanical/electrical rooms with availability for occasional emergency commissioning support and weekend/evening critical testing activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license and PMP certifications.
  • Industry‑recognized commissioning certification (currently or pursuing).
  • Experience working on hyperscale data center projects (AWS, Microsoft, Google, Meta, etc.).
Compensation

Estimated total compensation: $140,000 – $160,000 per year. Compensation may vary based on qualifications, location, and market conditions.

Location & Travel

Remote – Denver, CO. Candidates must live near a major airport and be willing to travel up to 50% of the time, including overnight stays.
