Responsibilities

This position supports the preparation of safe and efficient roadway designs in order to advance PennDOT projects. This specialized work includes drafting, calculating project elements, and assembling complete plan packages that guide construction. As a Highway Designer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Design Preparation: Develop construction and right‑of‑way drawings and determine quantities for a wide‑range of roadway projects
  • Geometry Calculations: Compute grade lines, curve data, drainage needs, and earthwork quantities for design accuracy
  • Drafting

    Activities:

    Produce detailed plans using CADD tools from preliminary layouts to final drawings
  • Field Support: Assist engineers during field visits by taking notes, measurements, and reference sketches
  • Data Interpretation: Apply survey notes, aerial photographs, and engineering information to support project designs
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety procedures, report hazards, and understand emergency actions for all work areas
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full‑time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday‑Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home part‑time, up to 5 days per pay period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $59,345.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
  • One year as a Highway Draftsman‑Designer; or
  • Three years of professional experience in highway design work including six months of CADD operation, and an Associate's Degree in civil engineering, drafting, or design technology; or
  • One year of professional experience in highway design work including six months involved CADD operation, and a Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, or a closely related field; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
Other Requirements
  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid driver's license.
  • You must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
