At the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Bureau of Bridges and Structures, you'll join a team that serves as the statewide bridge authority, supporting the design, construction and preservation of bridge assets across Michigan. Your work will contribute to infrastructure that connects communities, supports commerce and serves millions of travelers throughout the state.
This position offers the opportunity to work with a wide range of transportation professionals, including consultant partners, contractors, and internal project teams, to help deliver bridge rehabilitation, bridge replacement and new bridge construction projects. Success in this role comes from fostering strong relationships, encouraging collaboration and working together to develop practical solutions that keep projects moving forward.
As the next Transportation Engineer Licensed Specialist, you will be responsible for:
- Managing multiple consultants employed to perform design of MDOT bridge rehabilitation, replacement or new construction to ensure the work is done in conformance with design standards and practices, staying within the contract schedule and budget, and assembling the bids letting package.
- Preparing and reviewing the design of bridge projects of various complexity assigned to the unit.
- Preparing proposal material, reviewing project‑related documents, and checking final plans.
- Overseeing work activities of professional transportation engineers.
- Assisting unit supervisors in the review and coordination of the unit projects.
- Developing multiple scopes of work statements and budgets for trunkline bridge rehabilitation or new bridge construction projects to be prepared by contracted consultants.
- Coordinating projects within MDOT, other state agencies and outside entities.
- Initiating the preparation of agreements with participating cities, counties and railroads.
- Initiating the preparation of applications for permits from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities for assigned projects.
Education
:
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
Experience
:
Four years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.
Additional Requirements

- Possess a registered professional engineering license as required by the State of Michigan and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
