System Safety Engineer

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain hazard analyses and software safety assessments for the end item and its subsystems.
• Create hazardous material management plans and execute them throughout the program lifecycle.
• Recommend safety‑critical features, controls, and design criteria to mitigate or eliminate identified risks.
• Write, review, and deliver safety documentation, briefings, and presentations for technical reviews, customer briefings, and independent safety boards.
• Lead System Safety Working Group (SSWG) meetings and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers and customers.
• Flow down system safety requirements to suppliers and verify their implementation in designs.
• Assist in requirements development, verification, and validation of safety‑related functions.
• Review specifications, design changes, and technical documentation for potential safety impacts.
• Support test range and operational safety requirements, and help design test activities that demonstrate compliance.
• Contribute to accident investigations, identify root causes, and drive corrective action plans.
• Work independently while leveraging the broader safety organization for mentorship and expertise when needed.

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
• Experience developing and implementing a System Safety Program in accordance with MIL‑STD‑882.
• Experience evaluating system safety requirements.
• Working knowledge of MIL‑STD‑882 and its associated analyses.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Team collaboration skills with engineers, suppliers, program managers, and customers.
• Ability to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.
• U.S. citizenship is required.

• Experience supporting independent government Safety Review Boards.
• Knowledge of Human Factors Engineering.
• Familiarity with missile and launcher systems.
• Current Secret clearance with a 6‑year background check.
• Model‑based engineering knowledge.
• Experience with DOORS requirements application.
• Self‑starter capable of performing tasks with little direction.
• Effective analytical problem‑solving skills and detail‑oriented work.
• Ability to learn and work with System Safety specific software tools.
• Experience with Range Safety Officers and/or Flight Test Support.

This position requires a government security clearance; the selected candidate must obtain a Secret clearance and be a U.S. Citizen.

Position is located in Orlando, Florida. Part‑time remote telework is allowed; the employee will split the work schedule between a designated Lockheed Martin facility and remote work.

Schedule:

4×10 hour days, three days off per week. Relocation is possible.
