Position: STAFF 1, ASSOCIATE ENGINEER

role overview

the nevada department of transportation (ndot) scheduling & estimating section of the design division is hiring for a staff 1, associate engineer in carson city, nv. This position supports the successful planning and delivery of transportation projects statewide, balancing funding across project phases and ensuring data integrity and system reliability within the masterworks system.

responsibilities
  • support planning, cost estimation, and data integrity functions essential to transportation infrastructure projects.
  • test and validate bug fixes within the masterworks system, ensuring reliable production performance.
  • maintain project data within the masterworks system, ensuring information is current, accurate, and accessible.
  • assist in reviewing engineers’ cost estimates within the masterworks system.
  • create conceptual designs, including roadway geometrics, quantity calculations, and preliminary cost estimates for early‑stage project development.
  • plan, design, analyze, and inspect highway systems, bridges, and related structures.
  • design and analyze traffic systems, lighting, striping, and overhead traffic sign support structures.
  • design and evaluate pavement structural sections, developing rehabilitation strategies.
  • perform technical and statutory review of water right applications; assist in hearings and draft state engineer rulings.
  • provide water quality clearance for highway projects, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • review applications, oversee inspections, and recommend enforcement actions for wastewater, air pollution, and hazardous waste facilities.
  • identify new, replaced, and rehabilitated bridges, map locations for scheduling, review bridge plans, and conduct on‑site inspections.
  • conduct highway construction inspections, ensuring adherence to specifications and preparing final reports including cemms for contracts awarded by the department.
  • perform related duties as assigned.
qualities and experience
  • certification by the nevada state board of professional engineers and land surveyors as an engineer intern.
  • bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related field.
  • one of the following: (a) two years of journey‑level technical experience equivalent to an engineering technician iii, (b) equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ability to work under the direct supervision of a registered professional engineer or under general supervision performing non‑licensure engineering work.
working knowledge
  • practical application of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to engineering problems.

  • engineering principles and practices.
  • graph and table formatting.
abilities
  • make computations and calculations involving engineering principles.
  • read and understand technical reports, maps, specifications, plans, and related documents.
  • write technical reports and compose correspondence for transmittal to other governmental agencies.

  • plan, organize, and schedule work to accomplish objectives.
  • work within a cartesian coordinate system.
  • work as part of a team, and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with contractors, co‑workers, and agency representatives.
