Bring your energy to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and help strengthen Pennsylvania's landscapes! We are looking for an Engineering Technician to support meaningful environmental work through survey projects that prevent hazards and protect public spaces. This role is well suited for someone who enjoys outdoor work and solving practical problems.

This position supports survey operations that address mining-related environmental challenges across the state, contributing to projects involving mine drainage, mine fires, reclamation, and subsidence concerns. As an Engineering Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Instrument Operation: Assist in the use of total stations, theodolites, transits, levels, and similar tools to gather survey data.
  • Geospatial Equipment Use: Operate high accuracy geospatial radios, receivers, controllers, and base stations.
  • Data Processing: Use survey software to produce reports and compute coordinates, elevations, angles, and distances.
  • Field Documentation: Record, calculate, and check field notes for accuracy.
  • Information Research: Visit county courthouses to obtain ownership records, deed descriptions, and related project information.
  • Equipment Care: Maintain and store survey equipment in proper working order.
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework:
    Opportunity to work from home part-time, up to 3 days per week, subject to change and in compliance with requirements.
  • Salary:
    Starting annual salary of $40,685.00 (before taxes) for new to Commonwealth employees.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or related engineering technology field.
  • Within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • Valid Class C Driver's License.
  • PA residency requirement met.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
