Leidos is seeking a Distribution Standards Engineer – Lighting who is passionate about developing and maintaining electric utility distribution standards with a focus on street and outdoor lighting. We're looking for someone dedicated to driving consistency, quality, and innovation across utility design standards while working closely with clients and internal engineering teams. In this role, you'll gain expertise in utility standards development, NESC compliance, lighting technologies, engineering specifications, and industry best practices, helping shape the future of utility distribution design.
Travel:
This position has remote-working capabilities, but the preference is for candidates to be located within a commutable distance of Southern Louisiana (New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette), so we can provide support for our local utility customers as needed. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to be available for in-person meetings and assignments throughout the customer territory in Louisiana on an as-needed basis.
As a Distribution Standards Engineer, you can expect to:
- Develop and maintain electric utility distribution standards, specifications, and standard drawings with a focus on street and outdoor lighting.
- Review engineering design packages for compliance with utility standards, applicable codes, and client requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and utility clients to develop, implement, and improve lighting and distribution standards.
- Support the evaluation and adoption of new lighting technologies, materials, and equipment, including LED and smart lighting solutions.
- Provide technical guidance on NESC, ANSI, IEEE, IES, and utility-specific distribution standards.
- Support standards governance, engineering documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives that promote consistency and quality.
- Participate in customer meetings and provide technical support as needed.
What Sets You Apart (Background Requirements):
- 2+ years of relevant electric utility experience with a focus on distribution standards, street lighting, or outdoor lighting.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, or related discipline) from an ABET-accredited institution; additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and utility distribution design practices.
- Experience developing or maintaining engineering standards, specifications, or standard drawings
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
You Might Also Have Some previous experience with:
- ANSI, IEEE, and IES standards.
- LED street lighting, smart lighting systems, and lighting asset management.
- GIS, CAD, or utility engineering software.
- Utility work management systems and engineering documentation.
