Distribution Engineer (PE) – Job Description

This role sits within the Distribution Department and focuses on engineering, designing, and reviewing overhead and underground electric distribution lines ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV. The Distribution Engineer develops detailed work packages for new customer construction projects and asset replacement programs, ensuring all designs meet rigorous quality, safety, and consistency standards. The position requires a licensed Professional Engineer with deep experience in utility distribution design who can lead complex projects, support construction activities, and provide technical guidance to other team members in a largely remote work environment.

Responsibilities
  • Design and review overhead and underground electric distribution lines from 4 kV to 69 kV, including projects from 12.5 kV to 34.5 kV.
  • Develop detailed work packages for overhead distribution, underground residential distribution (URD), reconductoring, asset replacement projects, and underground cable/conduit systems.
  • Design complex overhead and underground distribution projects in both urban and rural environments in full compliance with engineering and construction specifications.
  • Perform field engineering of project requirements, including identification of conflicting utilities, engineering and design calculations, and development of required work permits.
  • Develop Point to Point (PtP) testing plans and lead both field and office personnel in executing field testing activities.
  • Coordinate small design teams to develop budgets, prepare scoping documents, establish design criteria, and produce project deliverables.
  • Provide engineering support to clients during construction, including participation in construction meetings, coordination efforts, and community outreach as needed.
  • Review completed designs and design products to ensure compliance with established quality and consistency standards.
  • Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities of others within the work group, team, department, and external stakeholders to successfully complete substation‑related projects.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance to lower‑level employees to support their development and ensure high‑quality project execution.
  • Identify and initiate corrective actions when project objectives, particularly for substation and distribution projects, are not being met.
  • Interpret applicable codes and regulations and develop standards for construction projects to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Promote engineering professionalism, best practices, and adherence to established standards across all project work.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement plans for complex engineering projects by establishing goals, objectives, schedules, resource needs, and information requirements.
  • Travel up to 30% of the time to client sites, with trip duration varying based on project needs, to support design, field engineering, and construction activities.
Essential Skills
  • At least eight years of experience with electric utility distribution design projects.
  • At least eight years of experience in overhead distribution, underground residential distribution (URD), reconductoring, asset replacement projects, and underground cable/conduit distribution design work package development.
  • At least eight years of experience delivering complex overhead and underground distribution projects in both urban and rural environments.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Strong background in utility power distribution engineering and design.
  • Proficiency with drafting and design tools, including experience using AutoCAD for distribution design.
  • Experience working on utility distribution services or electrical engineering within commercial construction environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply engineering and construction specifications, codes, and regulations.
  • Proven capability to lead and coordinate engineering work across teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop and review detailed engineering calculations, design documents, and work packages.
