Job DescriptionAbout the Work Unit The Alamosa Engineering Residency provides engineering expertise in developing, building, and maintaining a safe and integrated transportation system. The unit manages or oversees projects for upgrading, reconstructing, and maintaining the highway system along with other projects that have federal, state and local funds. Design, oversight of design, management of NEPA documentation, consultant management, construction management along with project management are provided.
About the Position This position is a licensed engineer and is responsible for designing transportation projects, managing the entire design process from scoping to advertisement, preparing construction plans, specifications and cost estimates for transportation improvement projects. Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Apply current engineering principles and theories, design specifications, and federal, state, and local design standards to develop plan sets and specifications for roadway projects, including new construction or reconstruction of intersections, corridor widening, roadway surface treatment, bridge improvements, etc.
- Design transportation projects and perform project management during the design phase for highway improvement projects.
- Manage the design process from scoping to advertisement, preparing construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Use computer-aided drafting (CAD) software to prepare plans.
- Incorporate field survey, environmental study, traffic data, right-of-way information, hydrology/hydraulic design, structural design, utility locations/relocations, and other information as required when developing design projects.
- Provide technical information to CDOT specialty branches and outside municipalities to ensure that design standards are addressed and incorporated into roadway construction plans.
- Oversee lower level engineering positions for conformance to CDOT policy and procedural directives; train and mentor less experienced project staff.
- Manage the work of consultants and local agencies in order to accomplish project completions, including prioritizing assignments required by the contract.
- Responsible for engineering details as well as satisfactory completion of highway design; provide ongoing design support during construction.
- Ensure timely project advertisement and other major milestones, while meeting both design and construction budgets.
- May act as the CDOT engineer of record and will stamp plans in accordance with the regulations governing their engineering license.
- Serve as project manager during design for various infrastructure projects and planning and environmental studies.
- Manage large, complex projects and environmental studies, including those that use innovative contracting methods.
- Serve as a CDOT representative and provide expertise in meetings with the public, local/state entities, businesses, railroads, special interest groups, and utilities.
- Participate on committees and/or task forces to help CDOT implement improvements and meet department goals.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Your schedule will be primarily Monday – Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule
- After a training period, you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
- Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office.
- Regular travel required during work hours throughout the Region.
- Overnight travel throughout Colorado to projects throughout the Region and meetings.
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles.
- May be required to work on night projects as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors. OR
- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from another U.S. state's Board of Licensure. If meeting qualifications with an out-of-state PE license, it would be a condition of employment to obtain your Colorado PE license…
