Rocky Mountains Region Engineer
Trout Unlimited (TU) is a national conservation organization dedicated to protecting, reconnecting, and restoring cold‑water fisheries and their watersheds. We are seeking a Regional Engineer to join our team of conservation professionals in the Rocky Mountains Region, which includes Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. This position will assist TU managers with outsourced design work, collaborate in the growth of TU’s engineering design team, and be responsible for the planning, technical design, and construction oversight of diverse stream restoration, fish passage, and watershed conservation projects.
The role is based in Colorado with remote work from a home office.
- Assist program and project managers with planning and managing engineering work completed by outside consultants, including crafting scopes, budgets, schedules, reviewing designs/deliverables, and providing construction oversight.
- Collaborate with existing engineers and national restoration center staff to build a sustainable internal engineering services division that integrates with existing TU program and project managers.
- Conduct stream geomorphic surveys, habitat assessments, aquatic passage assessments, and topographic surveys using total station and/or GPS equipment.
- Perform analytical assessments of aquatic habitats, design calculations, and modeling using tools such as Civil 3D, ArcGIS, HEC‑RAS, River morph, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Prepare construction‑level designs for stream restoration and conservation projects, including cost estimates, specifications, and drawing sets in Civil 3D. Stamp and serve as Engineer of Record for project designs as appropriate.
- Work with internal and external partners to plan and complete permitting, construction oversight, and monitoring activities.
- Travel to local and regional project sites for survey, construction, and meetings as required.
- Collaborate with TU staff, landowners, funders, contractors, and other project partners.
- This position is non‑supervisory and the list above is not exhaustive.
Staff and leadership at TU understand that life outside of work is important to personal health, and we strive to create a healthy and family‑friendly atmosphere. This is a full‑time position with a generous benefits package and a salary range between $90,000 and $120,000 annually.
At TU, we value diversity and actively seek candidates from historically underrepresented communities that have been impacted by degraded rivers and streams. We are committed to building space for all people to participate in our work to care for trout and salmon and clean our shared waters.
Requirements- Professional Engineering (PE) licensure, or ability to promptly gain licensure, in Colorado and other nearby states as deemed appropriate over time.
- Advanced education and continuing professional development in hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or biological systems engineering with at least 10 years of relevant experience (M.S. preferred, B.S. required).
- Extensive experience with road and culvert replacement construction standards and specifications, including stream simulation methodology for aquatic organism passage and hydrology and hydraulic analysis and modeling.
- Advanced knowledge of sediment transport principles and general landform processes related to riverine systems.
- Expertise and experience with Stage 0 or low‑tech process‑based restoration, natural channel design, and large wood addition techniques.
- Experience in construction management of stream restoration or other heavy civil water resources projects.
- Experience with pre/post‑fire watershed restoration projects, such as debris or sediment modeling and implementation of sediment reduction projects.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
- Self‑motivated and energetic, with excellent time‑management and organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability and willingness to travel and work longer hours in variable weather conditions. Valid driver’s license required.
- Willingness to assist in other tasks as necessary to advance TU’s conservation mission, such as grant writing, reporting, engagement events, advocacy, and volunteer coordination.
- Interest in developing and expanding TU’s engineering and design team, including review of designs by others and mentoring of staff.
- Passion for protecting and restoring coldwater rivers and their watersheds.
- Past experience writing grants or fundraising for large‑scale projects and programs is a plus.
