What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation’s security? If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) organization is seeking an experienced Health Physicist in supporting the functional mission spaces of embedded RP Operational Program dedicated to Accelerators, Radiation Effects, Pulsed Power and Directed Energy Programs.

The selected candidate will be called upon to provide technical and leadership support to Radiological Control Technologists (RCTs) and Radiological Engineers within their Radiological Operations (RO) team in close collaboration with the RP customers that are part of dedicated functional Mission spaces for implementation and application of all RP services.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Radiation Protection customer support teams and individual line organizations to implement operational aspects of corporate Radiation Protection requirements,
  • Recommend appropriate controls and develop and implement radiological monitoring protocols in the appropriate application of DOE regulations and orders as well as SNL policy,
  • Perform radiological hazard evaluations,
  • Design and implement radiological protection safety programs,
  • Provide review of customer-owned Safety Basis and Radiological Technical Work Documents (RTWDs, also known TWDs or OPs) in the functional space.
  • Assess program effectiveness and line implementation of requirements,
  • Assist with incident response, review, analysis, and reporting,
  • Develop corrective action plans and lessons learned,
  • Provide oversight of radiological control technicians (RCTs),
  • Provide mentorship to other Health Physicists,
  • Respond to and direct others in incident and emergency response situations.
  • Participate in and support internal RP audits and assessments as needed, as well as external audits and assessments as directed.
  • Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs.

Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Some travel may be required.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$87,400 - $168,800

* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or relevant field. Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
