the nevada department of transportation road design division is hiring for a staff 1 associate engineer underfill in carson city, nv. The incumbent will develop contract plans to construct roadway projects throughout the state and will produce computer-aided drafting (cadd) drawings that represent roadway cross sections, freeway interchanges, roundabouts, sidewalk details, traffic control, striping, and other special construction details.
duties include preparing typical sections, profiles, cross sections and special details; calculating and compiling plan quantities, preparing estimate summaries and structure lists, and incorporating quantities into the current estimating system; and producing traffic control and striping plans while providing technical input into design decisions.
the incumbent will utilize various computer applications to calculate, compile, and manipulate data into usable formats and will prepare and verify roadway geometrics using inroads and microstation.
responsibilities include reviewing and recommending changes to design plans, researching and compiling project data for incorporation into contract plans, and entering quantities and estimate data into ndot systems.
the staff 1 engineer works within a team to complete a contract plan set and will be assigned tasks such as calculating quantities, developing estimates, producing cadd drawings, and coordinating with other ndot divisions to incorporate other engineering disciplines into the contract plans.
the incumbent will develop knowledge of and apply roadway design standards set by aashto, fhwa, mutcd, and ndot design division policy and procedures.
additional responsibilities include verifying the accuracy of work produced by others, acting as team leader during field reviews, and assisting with training needs.
note: this recruitment may be used to underfill a staff 2 associate engineer. Incumbent may progress to the next level after meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with approval of the appointing authority.

essential qualifications- certification by the nevada state board of professional engineers and land surveyors as an engineer intern; or
- bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; or
- two years of journey level technical experience equivalent to an engineering technician iii in nevada state service; or
- an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
- participate in the planning, design, analysis and inspection of construction and maintenance of transportation and highway systems, bridges, and other structures.
- design and analyze traffic systems including traffic signal systems, highway lighting systems, traffic striping detail and overhead traffic sign support structures.
- design and evaluate pavement structural sections for new and existing roadways; develop new structural section or appropriate rehabilitation strategy.
- perform technical and statutory review of water right applications; assist in hearings, preparing draft state engineer rulings and assist in administering water rights including water allocation, inventories, and distribution.
- provide water quality clearance for highway projects including technical reports for inclusion in required environmental impact statements and ensure compliance with federal and state water quality regulations; perform assessments and determine compliance with federal and state requirements regarding air quality, noise control and hazardous waste and prepare required reports.
