The Nevada Department of Transportation Road Design Division is hiring a Staff 1 Associate Engineer Underfill in Carson City, NV.
Responsibilities- Develop contract plans for roadway projects across the state.
- Produce computer‑aided drafting (CADD) drawings for roadway cross sections, freeway interchanges, roundabouts, sidewalk details, traffic control and striping, and other construction details.
- Prepare typical sections, profiles, cross‑sections and special details.
- Calculate and compile plan quantities, produce estimate summaries and structure lists, and incorporate quantities into the NDOT estimating system.
- Create traffic control and striping plans.
- Verify roadway geometrics using InRoads and Micro Station.
- Review and recommend changes to design plans; research and compile project data for incorporation into contract plans.
- Enter quantities and estimate data into NDOT systems.
- Coordinate with other NDOT divisions to integrate additional engineering disciplines into contract plans.
- Verify the accuracy of work produced by others and act as team leader during field reviews.
- Assist with training needs as required.
- Design and analyze traffic systems, including traffic signal, highway lighting, traffic striping details and overhead traffic sign support structures.
- Evaluate pavement structural sections for new and existing roadways and develop rehabilitation strategies.
- Conduct on‑site highway construction inspections and prepare final reports, including the Construction Engineering Manpower Management System (CEMMS).
- Must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States; no sponsorship of employment visas.
- Options for eligibility:
- Certification as an Engineer Intern by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Two years of journey‑level technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service.
- A combination of education and experience sufficient to meet the above criteria.
- Knowledge of roadway design standards set by AASHTO, FHWA, MUTCD, and NDOT Design Division Policy and Procedures.
- Proficiency in InRoads, Micro Station, NDOT estimating systems, and CADD.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports and correspondence.
- Ability to work collaboratively within teams and independently on assigned tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills, capable of interacting diplomatically with the public in potentially hostile situations.
This recruitment may be used to underfill a Staff 2 Associate Engineer. The incumbent may progress to the next level after meeting minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and approval of the appointing authority.
Position is on‑site only; remote work options are not available.
