Position: Expression of Interest (Roads)

Job Description

WSP is seeking enthusiastic and talented engineers at grades ranging from Assistant Engineer to Principal Engineer to join the Roads team based in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The role involves leading day‑to‑day technical delivery of highway consultancy services throughout the project life cycle, from feasibility and concept design to planning, detailed design and construction. The successful candidate will be client‑facing and will demonstrate a track record of delivering schemes in local or national transport contexts.

Responsibilities
  • Manage projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi‑disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
  • Liaise with clients, develop strong trusted relationships, proactively manage expectations and provide comprehensive advice.
  • Undertake project technical lead and review roles.
  • Use technical ability and experience to support others and maximise their contribution to project and team goals.
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
  • Be responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Lead and manage other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, standard construction details, specifications and bill of quantities, supporting the preparation of tender packages.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
  • Actively participate in team resource coordination, supporting the setup of teams and assigning the right people to the right roles.
Qualifications
  • Relevant knowledge and experience of highway design and/or drainage systems at various stages of the project life cycle, including road geometry, roundabouts, at‑grade and grade‑separated junctions, inclusive active travel, highway drainage systems, road restraint systems, traffic signs, and road markings.
  • Demonstrable experience leading single or multiple design disciplines in relevant projects (e.g., road, public transport, active travel, public or private development).
  • Proficiency in directing and/or checking design outputs created in relevant software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley Open Roads Designer, Info Drainage, PDS.
  • Ability to proactively manage change on tasks/projects, clearly communicating potential impacts on programme, cost and quality.
  • Strong communication, client/stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
  • Chartered Civil Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer with extensive post‑professional qualification experience, or working towards achieving this.
  • Thorough understanding and application of relevant design codes such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, local authority design guidance, and the ability to prepare drawings for contract documentation and technical approvals, including applying departures from standard.
  • Experience complying with Designers’ Duties under CDM regulations.
