Controls Commissioning Engineer

Franklin, TN or Remote

At DCS, we don't just design automation systems—we bring them to life. As a Controls Commissioning Engineer, you'll play a critical role in transforming engineered solutions into fully operational systems at customer sites. You'll partner with Controls Engineers, Project Managers, Site Managers, Mechanical Engineers, Software teams, customers, and field technicians to commission complex material handling and warehouse automation systems that power some of the world's most recognizable brands.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on problem solving, thrives in fast-paced project environments, and wants to see their work come to life in the field. Every project presents new challenges, technologies, and opportunities to build expertise in industrial automation.

This role is remote-based, allowing you to establish your home office anywhere within the continental United States. From there, you'll travel up to 75% to customer sites throughout the commissioning, startup, testing, and go-live phases of projects. If you enjoy variety, working directly with customers, and seeing the impact of your work firsthand, this role offers the opportunity to support cutting-edge automation installations across North America.

What you'll do:

  • Execute on-site commissioning of automated material handling systems, including conveyors, sorters, merges, and supporting subsystems.
  • Perform I/O checkout, safety checks, device validation, and field wiring verification to ensure system readiness.
  • Configure, test, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, VFD, and industrial network components (e.g., Ethernet/IP, OPCUA, MQTT, IO-Link).
  • Validate system functionality against design specifications and functional requirements.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and project engineering teams to resolve issues and optimize system performance.
  • Support system integration testing, stress testing, and throughput validation.
  • Document commissioning results, system changes, punch lists, and test reports.
  • Train customer operations and maintenance teams on system functionality and best practices.
  • Provide on-site support during go-live and commissioning phases.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline; equivalent hands-on experience will also be considered.
  • 1+ years of experience commissioning industrial automation, controls, or material handling systems.
  • Familiarity with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar.
  • Experience working with industrial field devices including sensors, scanners, encoders, actuators, and safety devices.
  • Understanding of industrial networking concepts such as Ethernet/IP and other industrial communication protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control panel drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues under project deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% to customer sites throughout project commissioning.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience in warehouse automation, logistics, or high-speed manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems, MES integration, or WCS/WMS interfaces.
  • Knowledge of safety systems (SIL-rated devices, safety PLCs, lockout/tagout procedures).
  • Experience with barcode readers and/or vision systems.

This job description is not exhaustive. Other duties may be assigned as needed, and responsibilities may evolve to support the business and employee experience.
