Environmental Engineering Trainee
Start your career with purpose as an Environmental Engineering Trainee with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In this role you will learn essential engineering skills while supporting air quality monitoring efforts across the Commonwealth and contributing to improvements in monitoring systems.
Description of WorkThis position supports air quality programs by reviewing, monitoring, and evaluating continuous emission monitoring systems. The role includes processing emissions data, supporting system improvements, and learning foundational engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with reviewing monitoring plans and test protocols for emissions systems.
- Observe performance tests at facilities and support evaluation of results.
- Examine emissions reports and analyze information submitted by facility operators.
- Help develop and troubleshoot the online emissions data processing system.
- Discuss monitoring plans, requirements, and data findings with company officials and the public.
- Enter information into DEP systems while ensuring accurate and complete records.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours:
7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday–Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break. - Telework:
Option to work from home part‑time, up to 3 days per week, if you have a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and an approved Pennsylvania location. Telework availability may change; non‑teleworking staff report to the Harrisburg headquarters office. - Salary:
Starting salary may be non‑negotiable in some cases.
- One year of experience in environmental engineering and possession of a valid Engineer‑in‑Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
- A bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, or in any engineering field that includes or is supplemented by at least 9 credits in environmental engineering.
- Applicants within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree or credits will be considered to have met the educational requirements.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license required.
- Must meet the PA residency requirement.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
