Civil Engineer

Job Description

The Civil Engineer will prepare detailed construction documents and specifications, perform site civil and stormwater design calculations, and support permitting and regulatory reviews under the direction of a Professional Engineer. This role involves producing technical reports, collaborating closely with engineers, architects, and other project team members, and contributing to integrated, sustainable solutions for a variety of land development and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

+ Prepare comprehensive construction documents and specifications under the direction of a Professional Engineer.

+ Develop and update existing conditions plans, demolition plans, site and layout plans, grading and drainage plans, erosion control plans, utility and infrastructure plans, and construction details.

+ Perform design calculations for utility systems, stormwater management, green infrastructure, earthwork, grading, and erosion control under the guidance of a Professional Engineer.

+ Coordinate permitting and regulatory review processes with multiple agencies, including local municipalities, county governments, and state and regional agencies such as IEPA, MWRD, IDNR, and IDOT.

+ Submit permit applications and track review comments and approvals to support project schedules and compliance requirements.

+ Prepare concise technical documentation, including Stormwater Management Reports, Traffic and Circulation Analyses, and design impact analyses.

+ Collaborate closely with other civil engineers, architects, and multidisciplinary project team members to develop integrated and sustainable design solutions.

+ Support site civil and land development design for private and public sector projects, including schools, sporting facilities, office buildings, municipal facilities, and roadway or bridge work.

+ Contribute to site grading, stormwater management, sanitary sewer design, water supply systems, and basic site development design tasks.

+ Participate in a production-focused environment, delivering accurate, timely design and documentation to meet project deadlines.

+ Communicate design concepts and changes clearly with team members through written and verbal communication.

+ Maintain a valid driver's license and be available to travel to project sites or agency meetings as needed.

Essential Skills

+ B.S. or M.S. degree in Civil Engineering.

+ Minimum 1-2 years of civil design experience preferred.

+ 2+ years of experience in site civil or land development, including knowledge of site grading, stormwater management, sanitary sewer design, water supply systems, and basic site development design skills for private and public sector projects is a plus.

+ Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) certification, or a clear plan to pass the FE exam within the next year.

+ Proficient working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D.

+

Experience with site design and site development, including preparation of site plans and layouts.

+ Strong understanding of stormwater management and stormwater management design, including stormwater calculations and design of related infrastructure.

+ Familiarity with erosion control principles and design.

+ Good written communication skills for preparing technical reports and documentation.

+ Good oral communication skills for coordinating with project teams and regulatory agencies.

+ Valid driver's license.

+

Experience with land development projects such as K-12 and higher education facilities, sporting facilities, office buildings, municipal buildings, and roadway or bridge projects.

+ Exposure to green infrastructure and sustainable site design practices.

+ Ability to perform traffic and circulation analysis and prepare related technical reports.

+ Comfort working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary design environment with architects, MEP, structural, and construction professionals.

+ Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a production-focused setting.

+ Interest in gaining exposure to the full construction process within an integrated design and construction environment.

+ Ability to coordinate with multiple review agencies and respond to permitting comments effectively.

Work Environment

This role is based in an open-office environment within a Darien-area office that features an open floor plan, cubicle layout, and abundant natural light. The Civil Engineer will work on a land development team of approximately 6-7 engineers and designers in a highly collaborative setting that requires frequent communication and coordination on design work. The position is primarily in-office Monday through Wednesday, with the option to work from home on Friday;
