Substation Electrical Engineer

Role

• Design of electrical substation facilities such as busbars, grounding, lightning protection including site and equipment layout, control room, switch gear building etc.
• Prepare AC three-line diagram, elementary schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Perform AC and DC auxiliary system sizing calculations.
• Carry out optimal design in accordance with utility standards, industry standards, specifications and meet good engineering practices and constructability requirements.
• Prepare specifications for materials, equipment and construction work, and select equipment and materials.
• Prepare Bills of Materials and Cable Schedules.
• Coordinate design activities with other multi-discipline project team members.
• Assist in developing plot plans and elevation drawings for substation equipment.
• Assist in developing underground cable routing conduit and trench plan layout and sections for distribution network.
• Assist in relay setting calculations and protection coordination study.
• Provide technical support in procurement.
• Provide construction support including resolution of site queries, participate in meetings and site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
• Maintain complete project documentation with respect to engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a recognized institution.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in substation design.
• Knowledge of high voltage electrical systems, substation equipment as well as distribution for voltages from 25 kV to 765 kV.
• Knowledge of the standards applicable to the industry such as IEC, IEEE and Canadian Electrical Code.
• Knowledge of substation and power plant controls, their digitalization and associated cybersecurity will be an added advantage.
