Mechanical Engineer - Field Service
Job Description
This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on hands-on field work, performing mechanical and electrical checkout of odor control systems, adjusting PLC and HMI programming, and servicing pumps, blowers, and other industrial mechanical equipment. The position offers significant exposure to large, complex machinery and the full lifecycle of how this equipment is built, installed, and maintained within a small, collaborative engineering organization.
Responsibilities
+ Perform mechanical and electrical checkout of odor control systems at customer sites, ensuring proper installation, configuration, and operation.
+ Troubleshoot and repair pumps, blowers, and other mechanical and industrial equipment in the field and in the shop as needed.
+ Adjust and fine-tune PLC and HMI programming to optimize system performance and resolve operational issues.
+ Conduct field service activities, including inspections, testing, start-up, and commissioning of new and existing systems.
+ Diagnose equipment issues using mechanical aptitude and knowledge of hydraulics and industrial systems, and implement effective corrective actions.
+ Document service activities, findings, repairs, and configuration changes clearly and accurately.
+ Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, project, and controls engineers and technicians to resolve complex technical problems and support project delivery.
+ Communicate with customers on-site to explain findings, recommended repairs, and system operation in a clear and professional manner.
+ Support installation of equipment at customer sites, including mechanical assembly, alignment, and functional verification.
+ Maintain tools, test equipment, and service documentation in an organized and safe manner while working in the field and in the office.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering.
+ Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical and industrial equipment.
+ Hands-on experience working with machinery, equipment, or field service engineering.
+ Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools and industrial components.
+ Ability to perform basic adjustments to PLC and HMI programming for system checkout and optimization.
+ Knowledge of hydraulics and industrial equipment operation and maintenance.
+ Field service mindset with the ability to work independently at customer sites.
+ Clear, professional communication skills for interacting with customers and internal engineering teams.
+ Organizational skills to manage multiple service tasks, travel, and documentation.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in mechanical engineering or field service engineering environments.
+ Background in servicing pumps, blowers, and odor control or similar process systems.
+ Exposure to industrial controls, automation, and system commissioning.
+ Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
+ Comfort working in a small organization where engineers take on broad, hands-on responsibilities.
+ Interest in understanding how large industrial equipment is designed, built, and integrated into customer facilities.
Work Environment
This role operates in a hybrid and field-based environment. Approximately 30% of the time is spent in the office or working from home, collaborating with a team of around 30 engineers and technicians across mechanical, electrical, project, and controls disciplines. The team typically works onsite in the office one day per week, currently on Tuesdays, with flexibility to work remotely on other office days.
About 70% of the time is spent traveling to customer sites to install, commission, troubleshoot, and service odor control systems and associated industrial equipment. Field work may involve industrial plant environments, working around large machinery, pumps, blowers, and hydraulic systems, and requires appropriate safety awareness and attire suitable for industrial settings. The organization is small and collaborative, offering extensive hands-on experience, close interaction with cross-functional engineers, and the opportunity to see how large equipment is engineered,…
