Senior Substation P&C Engineer – Northeast
WSP is searching for a Senior Substation P&C Engineer to work from any mutually acceptable location in the eastern time zone. The role is focused on technical assistance and engineering guidance for multi‑site and multi‑phase substation projects.
Responsibilities- Determine data collection and analysis methods for protection and control requirements, substation equipment specs, procurement, IFR/IFC design, and compliance with IEEE, NESC, NERC standards.
- Review and provide input on third‑party substation design documents, protection and control deliverables, procurement lists, and project plans.
- Perform professional electrical engineering work on protection and control one‑line and three‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
- Incorporate future‑ready techniques and design requirements into protective relaying philosophies, substation automation architectures, and communication systems.
- Support senior engineers with research and recommendations for protective relays, meters, RTUs, telecommunications equipment, and panel components.
- Verify site characteristics and provide technical input on design, testing, maintenance, constructability, and sequencing issues.
- Develop engineering calculations and deliverables (DC load, battery sizing, AC station loading, CT/VT sizing, protection coordination, relay logic).
- Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety plans, and coordination documents with owners, consultants, and clients.
- Execute multiple concurrent substation projects, assist with design packages, cost estimates, and compliance with specifications.
- Prepare technical data and visualizations to support engineering decisions.
- Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations communicating design approaches and recommendations.
- Assist in analysis and action plans for risk mitigation activities.
- Implement site‑specific Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
- Comply with regulatory requirements for data integrity and security.
- Interact with clients, utilities, contractors, and regulatory agencies professionally.
- Maintain awareness of latest substation engineering techniques, tools, and industry practices.
- Collaborate with other engineers on federally, state, regionally, and locally funded infrastructure projects.
- Exercise responsible decision‑making and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
- 5 to 7 years of post‑education experience providing protection and control or electrical design deliverables for large capital projects, preferably substations or utility‑scale infrastructure.
- Engineer in Training certification.
- Proficient knowledge of electrical engineering principles and substation projects.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, construction management, and commissioning support.
- Working knowledge of engineering and construction laws, codes, and compliance practices.
- Ability to perform technical calculations and interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Project management experience supporting small‑to‑mid‑level projects.
- Experience conducting inspections and investigations related to construction and design.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Self‑leadership, attention to detail, and prioritization skills.
- Work independently and provide technical guidance to junior staff.
- Proficiency with technical writing, AutoCAD Electrical, Micro Station, spreadsheets, and engineering tools.
- Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to direct field personnel and subcontractors safely and efficiently.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP policies.
- Ability to work schedules beyond the typical workweek.
- Possible occasional travel depending on project needs.
- Professional Engineer License.
