This role focuses on power distribution design for a major utility client, with a strong emphasis on using DDS to develop and support distribution designs. You will work entirely remotely and will not perform any field work. The position centers on creating high-quality distribution design packages and, over time, may expand to include Quality Control and audit responsibilities for designs prepared by other team members.
You will also use Crews, a utility-specific system similar to SAP, to manage and complete work orders. This opportunity sits within a growing utility energy division, offering clear paths for professional development and leadership responsibilities.
Responsibilities
+ Perform detailed power distribution design work using DDS to support utility distribution projects.
+ Develop and update distribution design packages that meet the standards and requirements of the utility client.
+ Use Crews (a utility-specific version of SAP) to process, track, and complete work orders related to distribution design.
+ Apply engineering principles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery in all distribution designs.
+ Review your own design work to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards and client specifications.
+ Work toward taking on quality control responsibilities, including performing detailed QC checks on distribution designs prepared by other designers after gaining experience in the role.
+ Conduct design audits and quality reviews to identify errors, inconsistencies, or improvement opportunities before submittal to the utility client.
+ Collaborate with internal engineering, construction, and utility-focused teams to coordinate design solutions and resolve technical issues.
+ Support the utility energy division's distribution and reliability initiatives by delivering timely and accurate design outputs.
+ Maintain organized documentation of design work, QC reviews, and audit findings within DDS, Crews, and other project systems.
+ Participate in ongoing training and development activities to strengthen technical skills and deepen knowledge of utility distribution standards.
+ Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by sharing best practices, lessons learned, and process enhancement ideas with the team.
+ Prepare for potential future leadership responsibilities, including acting as a primary point of contact for assigned utility clients and leading design efforts on awarded work.
Essential Skills
+ At least 3 years of experience using DDS specifically to support First Energy distribution design projects.
+ Proven experience in power distribution and distribution design engineering for utility clients.
+ Hands-on experience delivering distribution designs that support power delivery and reliability objectives.
+ Familiarity with First Energy standards, processes, and expectations for distribution design work.
+ Experience using Crews or similar utility-focused systems (such as SAP-based platforms) to manage work orders.
+ Ability to perform or quickly learn to perform quality control and audit checks on distribution design packages.
+ Strong understanding of electrical and power distribution engineering concepts.
+ High attention to detail and accuracy in technical design work and documentation.
+ Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while meeting deadlines and quality expectations.
+ Effective communication skills to collaborate with internal teams and support coordination with utility clients.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience performing quality control or QC reviews of designs prepared by other designers, especially for submittals to First Energy.
+ Background in civil, electrical, or related engineering disciplines supporting the utility industry.
+ Exposure to utility-related work such as construction services, site development, survey, storm water, transportation, or wastewater projects.
+ Interest in long-term professional growth within a utility energy division that is experiencing significant expansion.
+ Motivation to pursue professional development opportunities, including preparation for the FE exam and eventual PE licensure with organizational support.
+ Ability to adapt to working with multiple utility clients and projects across different regions as the division continues to expand.
+ Strong organizational skills to manage multiple work orders, design tasks, and QC activities simultaneously.
Work Environment
This position is 100% remote, allowing you to perform all work from a home or remote office environment with no field work required. You will primarily use DDS for power distribution design and Crews, a utility-specific system similar to SAP, to manage and complete work orders.
