General OverviewThe Environmental Compliance Manager oversees and ensures organizational compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental compliance programs related to air, water, wastewater, stormwater, and waste management activities. The Environmental Compliance Manager provides regulatory guidance, conducts audits and inspections, manages permitting and reporting requirements, and serves as a key liaison with regulatory agencies.
Through proactive risk management and collaboration with operations and project teams, this role supports regulatory adherence, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.
This position reports directly to the General Manager.
Responsibilities- Develop, implement, and manage environmental compliance programs and policies
- Monitor regulatory requirements and ensure organizational adherence to EPA, state DEP, and local environmental regulations
- Manage environmental permits, approvals, renewals, and compliance reporting
- Conduct internal environmental audits, inspections, and compliance assessments
- Identify compliance risks and develop corrective and preventive action plans
- Provide regulatory guidance and technical support to operations, engineering, and project teams
- Serve as primary point of contact with regulatory agencies, inspectors, and external stakeholders
- Prepare and review regulatory reports, submissions, and environmental documentation
- Support incident response, investigations, and regulatory notifications when required
- Develop and deliver environmental compliance training to employees and leadership
- Track, analyze, and report compliance metrics and trends to management
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and best practices in environmental performance
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, civil engineering, or a related field required
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental compliance, permitting, or regulatory management
- Professional certifications such as CHMM, CEP, CPESC, or similar preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure a plus
- OSHA environmental or safety training certifications preferred
- Valid driver’s license may be required
- Experience in engineering, water/wastewater, industrial, utility, or construction environments preferred
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations related to air, water, wastewater, stormwater, and waste
- Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to operational and project activities
- Experience conducting audits, inspections, and compliance assessments
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Proficiency with compliance tracking systems, reporting tools, and standard office software
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
- Combination of office, field, and facility-based work environments
- Exposure to industrial sites, construction areas, and operational facilities
- Occasional travel to project sites or regulatory meetings may be required
- May require extended hours to support inspections, audits, or regulatory deadlines
- Ability to conduct site visits, inspections, and field assessments
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs or ladders, and work outdoors as needed
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
This position requires flexibility in office location and scheduled hours, as well as assuming a role in fieldwork. Remote work will be common, and location will change dependent on the workload. In cases of severe weather, illness, or unique circumstances, remote work hours must be previously discussed and approved by the immediate supervisor.
