MDOT is seeking a motivated Transportation Planner to support statewide highway planning and programming. In this role, you will help analyze and monitor the Highway Capital Program, support project development, and assist in evaluating statewide mobility, safety, and system needs. Your work will help ensure that transportation funds are used effectively and that Michigan’s transportation system remains safe, efficient, and future‑focused.
As the next transportation planner, you will have opportunities to:
Responsibilities- Support the implementation of region‑level planning studies by evaluating corridor condition, mobility, and safety needs.
- Facilitate and/or participate on a subcommittee that is responsible for project selection and program guidance, ensuring federal‑aid funding requirements are followed, and maintaining all pertinent guidance documents for the program.
- Monitor and report on the state’s Highway Capital Outlay program including Trunkline Modernization and Major Investment projects in cooperation and regular coordination with the Bureau of Development Office of Major Projects.
Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: planning (city, community, environmental, regional, and/or urban), environmental studies and/or sustainability, environmental sciences, engineering, statistics, mathematics, geography, geographic/geospatial information systems, logistics and/or supply chain management, or economics.
Experience- Transportation Planner 9 – No specific type or amount is required.
- Transportation Planner 10 – One year of professional experience in the planning, mapping, or assessment of transportation, land use, environmental, or community systems equivalent to a Transportation Planner 9.
- Transportation Planner P11 – Two years of professional experience in the planning, mapping, or assessment of transportation, land use, environmental, or community systems equivalent to a Transportation Planner, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Planner 10.
