Job Description
This position researches, develops, and evaluates state and federal policy, legislative proposals, and other initiatives that support the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) decision makers at the highest level. The role provides specific support to staff on active transportation policy and planning, and offers technical Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support for transportation planning efforts conducted by the Division. Additional tasks include data collection and processing, development of written materials and PowerPoint presentations, database/customer support, and spreadsheet development and analysis for initiatives and activities within, but not limited to, the Intermodal Services Unit (ISU).
Remote work and alternate work schedule requests may be considered within operational needs.
Required EducationPossession of a bachelor’s degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of: planning (city, community, environmental, regional, or urban), environmental studies and/or sustainability, environmental sciences, engineering, statistics, mathematics, geography, geographic/geospatial information systems, logistics and/or supply‑chain management, or economics.
Required Experience- Transportation Planner 9 – No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Transportation Planner 10 – One year of professional experience in planning, mapping, or assessment of transportation, land‑use, environmental, or community systems equivalent to a Transportation Planner 9.
- Transportation Planner P11 – Two years of professional experience in planning, mapping, or assessment of transportation, land‑use, environmental, or community systems equivalent to a Transportation Planner, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Planner 10.
- If applicable, attach a copy of your official college transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation. Candidates with foreign degrees must have credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents.
- MDOT does not participate in E‑Verify and does not sponsor visa applications.
- All newly hired state employees are required to submit and pass a pre‑employment drug test, physical exam (if applicable), and criminal and driving record checks. Employment offers are conditional upon these results.
