Project Overview

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas fired power generation facilities in the U.S. The Tallgrass CCGT project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early‑stage development, that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery this year.

The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, Houston or Cheyenne, Wyoming, as single status, to support preconstruction planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate on a long‑term assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award.

Job Summary

The Lead Rigging Field Engineer is based to Bechtel Equipment Operations, Inc. reports to Project Field Engineer at the project site. The Lead Rigging Engineer provides operational and technical direction to assigned construction engineers, construction personnel, including craft, regarding rigging‑related construction processes, procedures, and requirements. #LI-BH1

Major Responsibilities
  • Provides technical guidance on rigging‑related technical queries and the development of transport and lift strategies for project
  • Provides technical expertise to support rigging personnel and to develop rigging, transport, and lift strategies for project management and field engineering personnel
  • Establishes best practice in Bechtel through the development and maintenance of Bechtel's rigging‑related procedures and standard work processes and monitors applications of and compliance of the processes and procedures
  • Provides operational and technical direction to rigging crews and to assigned construction engineers and construction personnel, including craft, regarding rigging‑related construction processes, procedures, and requirements. May provide operational guidance to senior management team.
  • Assists with maintaining contact with Traffic & Logistics regarding feasibility of heavy/oversize haul and barging/heavy‑lift shipping and marine operations, temporary dock facilities and haul routes to site
  • Monitors compliance of rigging operations with approved rigging plans and applicable codes
  • Provides Procurement with input regarding subcontracts for specialist lifting and transport works
  • Liaises with subcontractors regarding the planning and execution of specialist lifting and transport works
  • Assists the Rigging Superintendent (RS) and/or CRE by providing the design support necessary for the rigging plan development
  • Maintains contact with engineering regarding plant layout, foundation design, vessel/module designs, provision for lifting, and verification of the suitability of imposed loadings
  • Prepares technical specifications for bid packages
Additional Responsibilities
  • Reviews and approves medium and critical lift and transport studies when needed
  • Reviewing structural calculations of lift points or lifting devices to determine compliance to applicable standards - determine when an RPE or a graduate of an accredited college or university is required, identification of standards (ASME; BTH-1, Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices; AISC; others), stress levels and factor of safety for types of stress (compression, tension, shear and load combinations), design media review process, identification of various types of materials and environmental effects.
  • Experience with calculating slings and rigging hardware loading and effects on capacity - calculating sling loading using trigonometry, moment magnification factors on lifting attachments, forces and moments on lifting attachments and BTH lifters, cause of sling failures, types of sling protectors, sling cut protection and edge effects on slings, code requirements for "adequate" protection, D to d ratio
