Job Summary

Water Quality Technician Lead

We are looking for a Water Quality Technician Lead to work Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with Friday off. The position is part of the City of Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department and will protect the water distribution system.

About Chandler

The City of Chandler was the first in Arizona to receive accreditation of its water and wastewater operations from the American Public Works Association, the toughest accreditation in the industry. The Utilities Division manages the water treatment plant, 32 wells, 19 booster stations, and shared facilities with the Town of Gilbert. It also operates wastewater and reclaimed water infrastructure, including industrial wastewater/brine reduction.

Over 64 million gallons of fresh water and 30 million gallons of wastewater are treated daily to class A+ reclaimed water for irrigation and industrial use. The water system relies on Salt River, Verde River, Colorado River, and extensive groundwater wells.

Responsibilities
  • Implement the city’s cross‑connection control program.
  • Collect drinking water samples for regulatory compliance and operational process control.
  • Respond to customer service calls regarding water quality issues.
  • Verify proper disinfection and flushing of new water lines.
  • Provide lead direction to Water Quality Senior Technicians, ensuring work quality, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or 60 credit hours towards a degree in chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in physical or chemical testing, water treatment, water distribution system, sewer system maintenance, or a directly related field.
  • ADEQ Grade 3 Water Treatment or Water Distribution Certification at hire or promotion.
  • Backflow Assembly Tester Certification at hire or promotion.
  • Cross Connection Specialist Certification at hire or promotion.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience.
Notes

This is a regular full‑time position with a 6‑month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 4 months should another position become available. The City of Chandler will conduct a pre‑employment driving record check and fingerprinting as conditions of employment. All applicants are subject to the City’s drug‑free workplace policy.
