Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Hotcell Instrumentation and Data Department Manager to work at the Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF). You will provide managerial leadership and technical expertise to support engineering staff that collect Post-Irradiation Examination (PIE) data of irradiated nuclear reactor fuels and material and troubleshoot remotely operated instrumentation & equipment. Moreover, the department works collaboratively with other research and engineering groups to develop the next generation of remote instruments.

This position reports to the Fuels PIE Division Director.

This position is located at our Materials and Fuels Complex, which hosts the core of the U.S. nuclear research and development capabilities with a diverse array of facilities designed for remote work on highly irradiated fuels and materials. A new fuel idea can be designed, fabricated, tested, and analyzed at MFC to better understand the effects of irradiation. Many groups, such as universities, industry partners, other national laboratories, international research organizations, and other federal agencies are working  team works a 4x10 schedule every Friday off.

  • Recruits, coaches, and grows specialists in a narrow, hard-to-replace skill set; builds bench strength for a small, high-expertise team.
  • Participates in the development of overall objectives and long-term goals of the department and the division
  • Bridges operations staff and research scientists; translates researcher needs into engineering requirements and vice versa
  • Drives troubleshooting in a hazardous, access-limited (hot cell) environment where trial-and-error is costly.
  • Reports to leadership and out to the research user community with equal clarity.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor of Science degree and 8 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree and 6 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience managing or supervising teams.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q/L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

the ideal candidate will have hands-on background in remote handling/instrumentation, electromechanical Design & Drafting Experience, Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and Asset Suite and Configuration Management Experience.

  • The target pay range for this position is $158,712- $237,174. The full salary range is $107,844 - $274,980. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP:
    This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance.
