Position: Bicycle-Pedestrian Safety Engineer (Civil Engineer (Transportation)

As a Bicycle-Pedestrian Safety Engineer with the Department of Transportation, you will be part of a mission-driven team improving roadway and trail safety. This role allows you to apply engineering skills while working closely with partners, municipalities, and the public. You will help identify concerns, develop solutions, and support safer travel for people of all ages. Take on a rewarding role that directly supports safer and smarter movement across the state.

This position supports roadway and trail safety by applying engineering principles, reviewing crash data, and coordinating bicycle and pedestrian programs. You will play an important role in identifying problems, recommending improvements, and guiding safe transportation planning. As a Bicycle-Pedestrian Safety Engineer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Safety Analysis: Review crash data and apply engineering principles to recommend roadway improvements
  • Project Evaluation: Assess proposed safety projects and suggest solutions based on proven practices
  • Bike-Ped Coordination: Support district bicycle and pedestrian programs and review crossing requests
  • Field Reviews: Participate in site visits to evaluate pedestrian crossings and roadway safety concerns
  • Public Response: Investigate safety complaints and provide information to municipalities and the public

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 5 days per pay period, upon successful completion of probationary period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Allentown.

    The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
  • Four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an engineer-in-training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline; or
  • One year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Special Requirements :
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license.
Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
