Senior Structural Engineer
WSP USA is seeking a highly energetic, self-motivated, and goal oriented Senior Structural Engineer to support our Transportation Facilities Group in the New York, NY office. The Transportation Facilities Group (TFG) leads and design projects that supports local and regional growth initiatives through small and large transportation projects. Our goal is to team with our agency clients and to develop solutions to the complex challenge of advancing transportation throughout the region. TFG has over 60 engineers and architects based in New York.
The position offers varied projects in the transportation field within the NY Metro Region. The Senior Structural Engineer position will work under the supervision of a lead structural engineer and includes designs in rail and bus stations, airports, transportation hubs, rail systems, as well as a wide array of projects that lead and support the engineering divisions. Clients include NYCT, MTA Bus, LIRR, MNR, PANY&NJ, Amtrak, NJ Transit, contractors, and local utilities.
The scale of work varies from small to very large projects and offers the candidate the ability to continually switch between multiple project types on any given day and offers tremendous exposure to varied disciplines within the New York Office.
Your Impact
- Lead engineering staff on various task assignments.
- Responsible for the development of structural design details, drawings and specifications, including calculations for new designs, rehabilitation and renovation work.
- Developing drawings in REVIT (BIM), AutoCAD, Micro Station and Open Building.
- Strong capabilities and understanding in using structural software such as STAADPro, RAM Structural System, SAP
2000, ETABS and SAFE (or equivalent). - Utilizing Microsoft Excel and Mathcad Prime to develop structural calculations.
- Leading field inspection teams for evaluation of structural systems of existing buildings.
- Coordination with various engineering disciplines as well as with architects in the development of design contract documents.
- Work within a paperless (or limited-use) office environment and remote working when required.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Typical project types include:
- Transportation Facilities including administration buildings, bus depot, shop and maintenance buildings, subway and rail stations, and substations.
- Vent and utility buildings.
- Aviation structures including terminals, concourses, hangers, and ancillary support structures.
- Resiliency related studies and design.
- Parks and recreation centers.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering, or equivalent. Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering, highly preferred.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural design experience in transportation projects.
- PE Licensed (NY/NJ) or capable of obtaining a New York State PE license within 1 year.
- Knowledgeable in state and city building codes, as well as industry standard specifications (IBC, ACI 318, AISC 360, etc.).
- Prior experience working with construction documents.
- Knowledgeable in STAAD.Pro, SAP
2000, ETABS, SAFE, RAM Structural System, Mathcad, Excel or similar structural design software. - Proficiency of AutoCAD and REVIT; knowledgeable in Micro Station and Open Building is a plus.
- Interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results oriented, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
- Excellent communication and writing skills and well organized.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
