Traffic Engineer

The Traffic Engineer will specialize in the design and analysis of traffic signals, phasing, and timing, and will develop comprehensive traffic control, pavement marking, and construction staging plans. This role uses Synchro, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Auto Turn, and related tools to support transportation and roadway design projects. The Traffic Engineer prepares specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents, and collaborates closely with project teams to deliver safe, efficient, and well-coordinated traffic engineering solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Design and analyze traffic signal sequencing, phasing, and timing to optimize traffic flow and safety.
  • Perform detailed traffic analysis and traffic modeling for civil and transportation engineering projects.
  • Develop engineering plans for traffic signals, pavement markings, traffic control, and construction staging.
  • Use engineering software programs including Synchro Studio, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), and Auto Turn to support traffic studies and design work.
  • Prepare complete contract documents, technical specifications, and construction cost estimates for traffic and roadway projects.
  • Collaborate with project teams, including Project Managers and design staff, to coordinate traffic engineering elements within broader transportation and roadway design efforts.
  • Apply civil, highway, roadway, and transportation engineering principles to support traffic signal design and transportation design.
  • Contribute traffic engineering expertise to transportation and roadway design projects, helping to refine design concepts and resolve technical issues.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • EIT or PE credential.
  • At least 3 years of experience with traffic signal design for civil engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering and transportation engineering principles, including highway and roadway design.
  • Hands-on experience with traffic signal design, traffic analysis, and traffic modeling.
  • Proficiency with Synchro or Synchro Studio for traffic operations analysis.
  • Proficiency with Highway Capacity Software (HCS) for capacity and level-of-service analysis.
  • Proficiency with Micro Station for design and drafting of traffic and roadway plans.
  • Ability to develop traffic signal, pavement marking, traffic control, and construction staging plans.
  • Ability to prepare specifications, contract documents, and construction cost estimates.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Civil 3D for civil and roadway design is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Auto Turn for vehicle turning movement analysis.
  • Background in transportation design, transportation engineering, and roadway design.
  • Experience working with traffic signals and traffic signal software beyond core tools is beneficial.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Interest in gaining deeper expertise in transportation design and signal design.
Work Environment

The position is based out of an office located in DeWitt, MI, with flexible options for fully remote work or a hybrid schedule to support work-life balance. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, totaling approximately 40 hours per week. The work involves typical professional office and remote settings, using engineering and design software such as Synchro Studio, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Auto Turn, Micro Station, and potentially Civil 3D to complete traffic and transportation design tasks.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $50.00/hr.
