This position focuses on inspecting construction work and materials to ensure they meet approved standards for safe and accurate project completion. As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform the following duties:
- Construction Inspection: Inspect phases of highway construction work for compliance with plans and specifications
- Material Verification: Check placement of concrete, asphalt, and drainage materials during construction
- Field Measurements: Assist with checking grades, elevations, and stake-out details with contractors
- Project Documentation: Complete diaries, calculations, and project records manually or electronically
- Communication Duties: Interact with staff, agencies, and the public to support project administration
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
- Overtime and travel as required
- Telework:You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Indiana. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
Additional details may be provided during the interview. - Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $46,827 (before taxes).

- Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work;
or - Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics;
or - One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);
or - Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);
or - One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology;
or - An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
