  • Assist the energy conservation team with identification and implementation of energy conservation initiatives, including the following.
  • Be responsible for analyzing current energy usage and strategies to provide proper environmental conditions with cost-effective energy utilization. The Energy Conservation Engineer will work closely with Systems Monitoring (Building Management System) to achieve this purpose.
  • Develop short, medium, and long-range plans to implement energy conservation measures. Recommend sound policies directed towards energy conservation, without compromising patient/staff safety or regulatory compliance. Assist Maintenance/Operations in evaluating HVAC and energy equipment maintenance to ensure effectiveness.
  • Provide review for all facilities design activities as relates to energy management. Utilize consultants as necessary to identify energy conservation measures. Review and recommend maintenance supply and equipment purchases to ensure energy-efficient replacements are being specified. Assist with regular reports as to the overall effectiveness of the energy management program.
  • Maintain liaison with the Maintenance/Operations department to provide optimum facility comfort while reducing energy consumption levels. Develop training options and/or improvement plans to ensure best operation in the area of HVAC and energy equipment maintenance.
  • Aid in the development of Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) including energy calculations, estimating project costs, estimating annual energy savings, CO2 emission avoidance, and simple paybacks.
  • Assist with re-commissioning efforts that partner our team with utility providers and our campus peers to optimize building equipment function.
  • Partner with the Office of Campus Sustainability and Innovation (OCSI) energy team to ensure alignment on initiatives as well as to explore project funding options.
  • Report out areas of opportunity to conserve energy and successes with the Michigan Medicine Facilities Team.
  • Articulate the University of Michigan Health mission and goals in the area of energy management and the University of Michigan goal of carbon neutrality by the year 2040 for global communication.
  • Take the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignments.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, business, or related field with emphasis on facilities management within a health-care environment.
  • Seven years of experience in energy management, mechanical systems design, construction and/or maintenance, or closely related field required.
  • Knowledge of: energy management program development, building management system software (Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens and ASI), HVAC and lighting systems.
  • Ability to manage budgets; strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional designation of Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred.
