The Environmental Compliance Engineer serves as a key technical resource and subject matter expert, supporting environmental compliance across the company’s paper and packaging manufacturing facilities in multiple states. The Environmental Engineer is responsible for managing environmental permitting and compliance programs, conducting audits, supporting facility projects, maintaining regulatory reporting requirements, and driving continuous improvement in environmental performance. This role can be based out of our Home Office locations in Ontario, CA, Catawba, SC, and Highpoint, NC.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Environmental Compliance & Regulatory Support- Serve as the primary resource for facility environmental managers and operations personnel regarding environmental compliance requirements and corrective actions.
- Evaluate and document the applicability of federal, state, and local air regulations to existing and proposed equipment, processes, and operations.
- Support facility compliance programs related to:
- Air emissions
- Wastewater discharges
- Stormwater management
- Hazardous waste management
- Spill prevention and response
- Chemical inventory and regulatory reporting
- Maintain environmental permit requirements, renewal schedules, compliance calendars, and reporting deadlines.
- Conduct technical reviews of permit applications, compliance reports, and supporting documentation prior to regulatory submission.
- Support environmental permitting and compliance reviews for facility modifications, equipment installations, maintenance activities, and capital projects.
- Conduct periodic environmental compliance audits and assessments across multiple facilities.
- Develop, track, and report environmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Assist facilities in responding to agency inspections, notices of violation, compliance deficiencies, and internal audit findings.
- Verify completion and documentation of corrective and preventive actions to ensure sustainable compliance.
- Administer and manage the company’s environmental compliance management software, including regulatory task calendars, permit requirements, inspections, reporting deadlines, corrective actions, documentation, and user access..
- Support facility personnel with system use, task completion, document uploads, and compliance tracking. Monitor overdue and upcoming requirements, identify compliance gaps, and elevate issues in accordance with company procedures.
- Monitor and interpret changes in environmental regulations, permit requirements, and industry best practices.
- Communicate regulatory changes and compliance obligations to impacted facilities and operational teams.
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (preferred), Environmental Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is a plus.
- 3+ years of environmental engineering experience in a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Experience supporting multi-site environmental compliance programs.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, including Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, EPCRA, and SPCC requirements.
- Ability to interpret environmental regulations and apply them to industrial operations.
- Experience preparing environmental permit applications and regulatory reports.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Proficiency with environmental management systems, compliance databases, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Frequency:
Up to 50% domestic travel required. - Scope:
Travel to company facilities for audits, inspections, training, project support, and compliance reviews.
