Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Senior
The Department of Environment, Health & Safety is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Senior to join its Environmental Protection & Permitting group. This position will support environmental compliance, due diligence, site assessment, investigations, remediation, and permitting activities across University properties and projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop, implement, and maintain projects involving environmental site assessments, investigations, and remediation in accordance with NREPA Act 451, Part 201 and Part 213.
- Attend project and design meetings to support environmental initiatives through design development and construction phases.
- Assist with environmental consultant management, including requests for proposals, contractor selection, contract terms and conditions, schedules, budgets, and services.
- Collect environmental samples, including groundwater, surface water, stormwater, wastewater, slurry, soil, and soil gas samples for analysis.
- Review plans for new development and redevelopment projects to ensure environmental due care obligations are met, including proper management of contaminated soil, groundwater, soil gas, and slurry.
- Coordinate with approved landfills to obtain waste disposal profiles and provide manifests for waste shipped off-site for disposal.
- Prepare periodic reports, guidelines, technical documents, and articles.
- Review reports, studies, environmental documents, and other project deliverables.
- Manage due diligence activities and reporting in anticipation of property acquisitions, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase II investigations, and Baseline Environmental Assessments.
- Submit final Baseline Environmental Assessments, as needed, to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy on behalf of the University.
Required qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, engineering, geological sciences, or a related scientific field.
- 3-5 years of experience coordinating environmental projects or programs.
- Knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and regulations, particularly NREPA Act 451, Part 201 and Part 213.
- Experience with project management, including consultant supervision, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with data management and analysis tools in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to pass a physical examination to allow for emergency response team participation and use of personal protective equipment, including a respirator.
- Willingness and ability to respond to emergencies after hours, on weekends, and holidays.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to move or transport up to 40 pounds.
Desired qualifications include:
- Certification as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist, or status as an Engineer-in-Training.
- Recent and relevant experience with environmental due diligence, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase II investigations, and Baseline Environmental Assessments.
- Active professional affiliations or participation in relevant professional organizations.
- Experience using CAD and GIS software.
- Experience with air permitting regulations and reporting.
