Sr. Structural Engineer (Heavy Industrial)

A well-established, multi-discipline engineering consulting firm is seeking experienced Structural Engineers to join its growing team. The firm supports complex engineering projects across the heavy industrial sector, including oil & gas, chemical, manufacturing, utilities, ports, pulp & paper, renewable fuels, and emerging energy infrastructure. This is a fully remote opportunity open to candidates throughout the United States. The team is looking for engineers who can bring a strong structural design foundation while working collaboratively across multiple engineering disciplines.

The ideal candidate will have experience designing steel structures, foundations, and industrial facilities, with particular value placed on engineers who have supported brownfield projects, structural modifications, equipment installations, and seismic design.

Projects range from smaller repair, retrofit, and maintenance assignments to major brownfield modifications and greenfield developments. Structural engineering frequently supports new or modified process systems, equipment, piping, tanks, and facility infrastructure.

Typical structural scope may include:

  • Design of shallow, mat, and deep foundations for industrial equipment, vessels, pumps, pipe racks, buildings, and other structures
  • Structural steel design for pipe racks, pipe bridges, equipment support structures, platforms, towers, and industrial buildings
  • Brownfield structural modifications, expansions, retrofits, and rehabilitation projects
  • Structural evaluations, field inspections, and existing-condition assessments
  • Seismic analysis and design of structures and equipment-support systems
  • Industrial buildings, including prefabricated and conventionally constructed facilities
  • Construction engineering and field support
  • Feasibility studies, conceptual engineering, permitting support, and early-stage project development
  • Marine structures such as piers, walkways, dolphins, and bulkheads, depending on experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform and lead structural analysis and design for industrial projects
  • Develop structural systems, calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Lead structural scopes from concept through detailed design and construction
  • Coordinate with mechanical, piping, electrical, civil, process, and other engineering disciplines
  • Evaluate existing structures and develop modifications or retrofit solutions for brownfield facilities
  • Develop scopes of work, engineering estimates, project budgets, and schedules
  • Review engineering deliverables and provide technical guidance to project teams
  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers and designers
  • Participate in client meetings and communicate technical recommendations clearly to project stakeholders
  • Provide occasional field engineering, inspection, and construction support
  • Support proposals and new business opportunities as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Approximately 8–10+ years of structural engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred and required for senior-level consideration
  • Ability and willingness to obtain PE reciprocity in additional states as project needs require
  • Strong experience with structural steel and foundation design
  • Experience supporting industrial, manufacturing, energy, chemical, oil & gas, utility, or other heavy industrial facilities strongly preferred
  • Experience with brownfield projects, structural modifications, retrofits, and existing facilities highly valued
  • Working knowledge of applicable structural codes and standards, including ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI
  • Seismic engineering and design experience is highly desirable
  • Ability to independently manage structural engineering assignments while collaborating with multi-discipline project teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites and the company's home office

Additional Experience That Stands Out:

  • AISC 341 seismic design
  • Industrial equipment foundations
  • Pipe racks and pipe bridges
  • Refineries, chemical plants, manufacturing facilities, terminals, or process facilities
  • Renewable fuels or carbon capture projects
  • Marine structures
  • Bridge design
  • Structural inspections and evaluations
  • NCEES Record
  • Structural Engineer (SE) licensure
  • Experience with in a smaller or mid-sized consulting/EPC environment where engineers manage a broad range of project responsibilities
