Senior Substation Designer

Substation Designer – Houston, TX

Seeking an experienced Substation Designer to create design drawings for electric power substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV. The role focuses on developing electrical layout plans, foundation drawings, conduit layout, grounding, control building plans, bills of materials, reviewing equipment drawings, collaborating with other disciplines, performing basic engineering calculations, and applying client, national, and state standards.

• Develop new or modify existing electrical layout/plan of substation equipment and structures
• Create substation foundation layout/plan drawings
• Generate section/elevation views from layout/plan drawings
• Produce conduit layout/plan drawings
• Produce substation grounding layout/plan drawings
• Develop control building layout/plan and section/elevation drawings
• Develop a complete bill of materials for all required electrical equipment and materials
• Review and comment on equipment drawings received from vendors and manufacturers
• Collaborate with other disciplines (e.g., Civil Engineers) as necessary
• Assist the project team with developing processes and procedures to increase team efficiency
• Perform basic engineering calculations to support engineering design
• Apply relevant client, national, and state standards to each assignment

• Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline
• Level 1: 2+ years of direct substation physical and electrical design experience using CAD software on electric utility industry projects
• Level 2: 4+ years of direct substation physical and electrical design experience using CAD software on electric utility industry projects
• Solid comprehension and application of design software such as Micro Station and AutoCAD
• Proficiency with Windows-based software (Word, Excel) for developing project deliverables
• Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs
• Advanced 2‑D drawing preparation skills
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and attention‑to‑detail skills
• Team collaboration with project managers, engineers, designers, and drafters in multi‑discipline groups

Additional experience with AutoCAD 3‑D applications is a plus.
