Thermal-Fluids Mechanical Engineer

Salary Range: $88,800.00-$. The pay offered will depend on the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

The Fermilab Accelerator Division Mechanical Support Department seeks a Thermal Fluids Mechanical Engineer who plans and performs engineering tasks—including research, design, and development of small to medium engineering projects or portions of large projects—compliant with all applicable local, state, federal regulations, DOE orders, and best practices.

• Equipment design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, and coordination of manufacturing manpower.
• Planning, implementation, and documentation of the installation of upgrades and repairs to the mechanical and vacuum systems that support the accelerator.
• Mechanical design, analysis, fabrication/construction, and installation of devices and equipment for the accelerator complex (e.g., beamline elements such as collimators and beam instrumentation, remote positioning devices, support structures, and vacuum systems).
• Lead efforts in general mechanical-system design, mechanical stress analysis, and thermal analysis.
• Design and plan the lifting/rigging of heavy components using material-handling equipment and techniques.
• Direct the activities of drafters, designers, technicians, co-op engineering students, and interns.
• Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices.

• Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution with 4+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s or PhD in an applicable discipline with 2+ years of experience.

• Analyzes data and performs engineering calculations.
• Develops designs, specifications, and documentation for complex engineering solutions.
• Plans and executes small projects from inception to operating status.
• Participates in procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, and operation.
• Leads one or more project processes and assists in cost estimation and budget monitoring.
• Provides technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, technicians, or less senior engineers.
• May participate in technical conferences, publications, and provide supervision or leadership of a team.

Work may involve heights, mental concentration, sitting or standing, tight work schedules, and visually demanding tasks. The role is onsite in Batavia, Illinois.
