About the Role:As a Telecommunications Researcher supporting our federal government client, you will be trusted to provide senior-level telecommunications oversight and technical expertise across a myriad of Wireless Communications R&D topics. This role requires a seasoned leader with deep knowledge of the wireless telecommunications industry, strong familiarity with the research community, and established relationships across government, industry, academia, and other key stakeholders. The ideal candidate will bring an appreciation for both foundational research and practical technology transition.
Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):- Advise on the technical framing of workshops, webinars, panels, and demonstration events across the portfolio
- Translate foundational research results toward development, demonstration, and translation outcomes, particularly for verticals-driven projects
- Identify translation opportunities and connect research teams with relevant industry partners and vertical-market stakeholders
- Support recurring progress meetings with funded teams and with NSF Program Directors
- Serve as a liaison to related organizations and initiatives, including research testbeds, standards bodies, and industry alliances
- Contribute technical perspective to collaboration and teaming activities that bring research teams together
- Advise the Virtual Office on where the global telecommunications landscape is moving and where the program should concentrate
- Provide input to program reporting, annual lessons learned, and the improvement process
You will work as part of a primarily remote team, with two semi-annual meetings at locations in the United States.
Experience/Skills:
- 10+ years of experience in wireless telecommunications, networking, or a related field, including substantial experience in wireless telecommunications research and development.
- A background in academic research, or a demonstrated track record of collaborating with academic researchers, sufficient to earn the confidence of university research teams
- Demonstrated technology translation experience, moving research results toward commercialization, standards, open source, or operational deployment
- Deep understanding of the global wireless telecommunications industry landscape, including key technology trends, stakeholders, and innovation pathways
- Working knowledge of emerging wireless vertical industries such as manufacturing, transportation, energy, healthcare, and public safety
- Demonstrated ability to engage credibly with senior leaders across government, industry, academia, and research organizations
- A working understanding of the National Science Foundation's role across fundamental research and translation, including the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships
- Established relationships across the telecommunications stakeholder community
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
- US citizenship or permanent resident and the ability to pass public trust clearance or suitability
Skills:
- Experience supporting federal research, innovation, or technology transition programs.
- Established relationships across the wireless telecommunications, networking, and innovation ecosystem.
- Experience working with research testbeds, public-private partnerships, standards bodies, or technology transition initiatives.
