Technical Services Associate – Lighting Technician

Position Status:
Regular full‑time
Oversee all lighting aspects of the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology Operations, Productions, and Technology (OPT) team. Responsibilities include rigging, design, programming, operation, and assistance with setup, operation, and tear‑down of all Bass School OPT‑serviced events. Manage maintenance, upgrade, troubleshooting, and procurement of all lighting equipment and accessories across venues under the OPT purview, including the Theatre, Lecture/Events Hall, Performance Hall, and any future Bass School venues.
Act as lighting designer, technician, and educator, training and supervising student workers in show lighting duties.
Bachelor’s degree in fine art or a related field and one (1) year of experience as a technical theater professional, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
PreferredEducation and Experience
Degree (BA/BFA) in Theatre Production, Lighting Design, or Entertainment Technology with an emphasis in lighting plus 3 years’ experience as a Lighting Technician in live entertainment, theatre, or events industry,
or Diploma (Technical School) plus 5 years’ experience as a Lighting Technician in live entertainment, theatre, or events industry.
Other QualificationsHolder must research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, and maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Highly proficient programming and operation of lighting consoles (specifically ETC EOS) and familiarity with lighting software (Vectorworks, Lightwright, Augment3D).
- Proficient with architectural lighting systems (ETC Paradigm) and control system integration (Crestron / Qsys).
- Demonstrable experience designing and programming theatrical productions and musical performances.
- Advanced knowledge of lighting principles, including color theory, beam angles, fixture types, DMX protocols, and networking.
- Comprehension of basic AC/DC electricity, power distribution, basic electronics, and computer operations.
- Strong technical aptitude and problem‑solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues under pressure.
- Operational knowledge of other entertainment production equipment such as audio/video/projection.
- Manufacturer’s certifications in industry‑related systems and equipment such as ETC, Qsys, Crestron, Dante AVoIP.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in a collaborative team environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
Outdoor work conditions; ability to lift and carry 50 lbs; work at heights on catwalks, ladders, and lifts; sit and stand for extended periods; work in low‑lit production environments; comfortable working in the presence of stage and smoke effects such as haze and fog; comfortable working in high sound level environments such as concerts.
