We’re seeking an experienced tax professional with deep expertise in Insurance Federal and Corporate Tax to join our team as a Technical Director, Tax
. This role is ideal for someone who has built their career within a Big 4 firm or public accounting environment and has significant experience supporting complex insurance industry clients. Candidates with personal tax backgrounds will not be a fit; we are specifically seeking corporate-focused, insurance-oriented tax leadership.
While we would prefer to fill this position in Columbus, Ohio, this could be a fully remote position
, open to candidates anywhere in the U.S. (except Alaska and Hawaii) with the expectation of working East Coast business hours to effectively support our teams and business partners.
In this role, you will partner with leaders across the enterprise to evaluate tax impacts on business decisions, lead the management and resolution of federal and state audits, and ensure accurate consolidated tax planning, reporting, and compliance. Success in this position requires strong technical tax expertise, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

- Extensive experience in Insurance Federal Tax and Corporate Tax (life, P&C, or multi-line insurance strongly preferred)
- Previous work in Big 4 or public accounting with insurance industry clients
- Proven ability to manage complex consolidated tax matters, including planning, compliance, audit management, and regulatory interpretation
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to structure information, workflows, and processes effectively
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate technical tax concepts for business leaders
- Ability to operate independently in a remote environment while partnering closely with cross‑functional teams

As a Technical Director, you'll manage the tax planning or preparation for all assigned enterprise companies to arrange business transactions to minimize tax liabilities and achieve the corporate objective for the transaction.
In addition, you'll manage the filing of the applicable return(s) and coordinate, control and settle the federal and state/local tax audits for assigned companies. You'll need detailed knowledge and application of consolidated tax return rules and regulations, including related acquisitions, divestitures, and general corporate activity in consideration of current tax case law, regulations, and pending tax legislation.
- Direct the implementation of tax modules in programs for the production of accounting data and operating results, ensuring active involvement with any system that incorporates tax calculations or generates data for tax calculations. Tax areas include life and property/casualty insurance, C Corporation and tax‑exempt organizations.
- Ensure the preparation and review of federal and state/local tax returns.
- Act as a subject matter authority for all tax audits and provide research for use in negotiated settlements to secure the most advantageous position for Nationwide.
