Job Summary

The College of Engineering (CoE) consists of eight academic departments and 40+ research centers, which along with the Dean's Office, has over 3000 employees and an annual operating budget of $292M. On an annual basis, the CoE receives funding from multiple sources including General Purchase Revenue (GPR), UW Foundation Gifts, Federal Grants and Industrial Grants. As a result, the CoE has complex financial and accounting needs that require oversight and coordination.

This position performs responsible professional accounting practices requiring the knowledge and application of accounting theories and principles for the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering. This position involves a variety of fiscal management, accounting and budgeting activities including monitoring and coordination of fiscal year end closing; monitoring expenditures, reconciling fund balances, interpreting fund requirements and deadlines, ensuring expenditures are in line with requirements, recommending action on various accounting questions, serving as a business operations resource person for state, university and college policy development, interpretation and implementation.

Applicants for this position will be considered for Accountant I and Accountant II titles. The title and compensation will be determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

Remote Work Eligibility

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non‑campus work location. The anticipated hybrid work schedule will be up to 2 days remote, with 3 days onsite after an initial 3‑month training period which will require working 5 days on site.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements basic solutions as needed
  • Assists in preparing budgets and financial projections
  • Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
  • Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments
  • Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year‑end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
  • Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures

Compensation

The starting salary for the position is $63,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in accounting, finance, or related role.
  • Experience working with complex automated accounting systems and processes
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and theories
  • Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet software
Preferred Qualifications
  • General knowledge of state and federal financial policies, regulations, and processes.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills as well as ability to independently determine priorities.
  • Experience with cash management, purchasing, travel, and reimbursements
  • Workday financial experience
  • Experience in Higher Education
  • Experience in interpreting and analyzing financial data.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to new systems.
  • Experience in preparing financial reports, spreadsheets and budgets. Skills in developing and providing training.
