The Senior Accountant (CPA) provides advanced accounting support to the Finance Director and plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of the agency’s financial records. This position focuses on operational accounting functions, general ledger management, bank account oversight, audit preparation, and financial process support.
The role serves as a senior technical resource within the Finance Department and supports departmental operations, compliance, and financial reporting, without assuming full departmental leadership responsibility.
Primary Responsibilities- General Ledger & Accounting Operations:
Maintain and manage the general ledger. Prepare and review journal entries and account reconciliations. Support month-end and year-end close processes. Maintain chart of accounts and account structures. Ensure accuracy and consistency in financial data - Banking & Reconciliations:
Monitor bank accounts and cash activity. Perform or assist with bank reconciliations. Track cash balances and account activity. Support cash management reporting - Audit Support & Compliance:
Assist in external audit preparation and documentation. Respond to routine audit requests and information needs. Support internal reviews of accounting processes. Assist with implementation of audit recommendations - Internal Processes & Controls:
Support internal control procedures. Assist in documenting and improving financial processes. Participate in process improvement initiatives. Help maintain compliance with financial policies and procedures - Departmental Support:
Provide technical accounting support to finance staff. Serve as a senior resource for accounting questions. Support Finance Director in financial operations. May provide functional leadership or project oversight but does not require direct staff supervision unless assigned by the Finance Director.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
- 5 years of professional accounting experience.
- Knowledge of Ohio public finance laws, GAAP, and GASB requirements.
- Experience managing financial aspects of MCO or Medicaid-funded contracts in a public or nonprofit setting.
- Familiarity with public finance systems.
- Experience in governmental, nonprofit, or fund accounting.
- Experience with general ledger management and reconciliations.
- Experience supporting audits and financial reporting.
- Strong accounting and reconciliation skills.
- Understanding of GAAP and public sector accounting standards.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Professional judgment and discretion.
- Process-oriented mindset.
- Traditional office environment with standard business hours.
- Occasional remote work may be approved as needed.
- May require extended hours during peak reporting or audit periods.
- Occasional attendance at evening board or committee meetings may be required.
