About the job:

At Montana State Fund (MSF), we are more than the state’s largest workers’ compensation insurer—we are Montanans serving Montanans. We are seeking Premium Auditor Trainees who recognize that auditing is both a technical function and a relationship building service supporting the success of Montana businesses. You won’t just be reviewing payroll records; you’ll be a traveling ambassador for our mission, ensuring Montana businesses are supported in having a clear understanding of their insurance coverage while enjoying the flexibility of the open road.

This is not a traditional desk job. As a Premium Auditor Trainee, Montana becomes your office. You will travel throughout your assigned region to meet with policyholders, understand their operations firsthand, verify payroll and job classifications, and ensure accuracy in coverage. Each interaction is an opportunity to build trust, provide education, and strengthen MSF’s partnership with the business.

This position balances independent field work with analytical review and offers a structured training program to build your technical expertise, customer service capabilities, and long-term professional growth.

Required Skills

What you will do:

  • Premium auditing: Conduct premium audits for a variety of Montana State Fund policyholders. Learn and apply understanding of related unique exposures, specialized coverage endorsements, accounting practices and specific classification code usage. Support the Other States Coverage Program (OSC) through gaining knowledge and awareness and in multiple state audit application abilities and requirements.
  • Customer education and training: Educate policyholders on applicable MSF payroll reporting requirements, policies, rules, regulations, and laws to ensure policyholder understanding of the workers compensation system and the services Montana State Fund provides. Provide meaningful audit experiences that enrich the customer experience and support policy retention.
  • Policy collaboration: Collaborate with internal Montana State Fund stakeholders, to ensure payroll and all other policy information is accurately reflected on both the audited and future policy periods.
  • Audit coordination: Select, schedule and complete audit assignments and compute audited subject payroll at customer sites. Verify insured’s business operations, legal status, job classifications and payroll distribution among work exposures by reviewing policyholder’s records, interviewing owners, and worksite observation. Obtain all necessary and pertinent customer documents to achieve thorough work file documentation and complete all required steps.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Professionalism & Integrity when representing MSF in the field and virtually.
  • Customer-Centric Mindset emphasizing education, trust, and strong relationships.
  • Communication Excellence, with the ability to explain complex information clearly.
  • Adaptability & Flexibility in varied environments and changing processes.
  • Resilience when navigating challenges, setbacks, or difficult conversations.
  • Curiosity & Learning Agility to understand new systems, rules, and operational details.
  • Relationship Building Skills with both customers and internal colleagues.
  • Self-Driven Work Style with effective prioritization and time management.
