South State Bank is a leading financial institution dedicated to providing personalized banking solutions for individuals, families, and businesses. This position is available for an experienced Middle Market Banker to lead and coach a regional sales team while also actively capturing new business and managing existing relationships.

Overview

Functions as the sales team leader (Coach) while also serving as a producing Middle Market Banker (Player) for a defined geographic market. The role requires partnership with regional management, collaboration with Commercial banking teams, and a focus on growth, client retention, and risk management.

Coach Responsibilities
  • Create and implement business‑development strategies with regional leadership.
  • Manage overall performance of Middle Market Bankers, providing coaching and feedback.
  • Conduct regular one‑on‑one meetings to communicate goals and expectations.
  • Leverage market knowledge to identify profitable prospects and support bankers in screening, structuring, and underwriting new deal flow.
  • Lead sales meetings, gather feedback, and continuously improve meeting effectiveness.
  • Model leadership behaviors that reflect South State’s core values and create a positive team environment.
  • Participate in community activities and collaborate with other regional banking teams, including Commercial, CRE, PB, and CML.
Player Responsibilities
  • Develop and retain full banking relationships with Middle Market operating companies.
  • Build consultative relationships that add value through timely delivery of appropriate banking solutions.
  • Partner with senior leadership, portfolio managers, credit officers, and product teams to prospect, manage, and underwrite credit opportunities.
  • Identify and deepen existing relationships through proactive joint calling and partnership with Treasury, Capital Markets, Wealth, Mortgage, and Retail teams.
  • Ensure credit requests flow through proper channels, meeting quality, structure and pricing requirements.
  • Underwrite loan requests in line with Bank policies and complete accurate credit packages.
  • Maintain a center‑of‑influence (COI) network that promotes market presence and generates referrals.
  • Complete documentation for all loans and deposits, resolve audit deficiencies, and adjust risk grades as required.
  • Price products according to Bank guidelines while ensuring optimal relationship profitability.
  • Demonstrate commitment to fair lending practices and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Essential Functions
  • Coach and Player responsibilities as described above.
  • Ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations, Bank policies, and the South State Code of Business Conduct.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, banking, or a related field (required).
  • Completed formal bank credit training program (required).
  • Master’s degree or a recognized banking school (asset).
  • 10+ years of Middle Market/Commercial lending or capital markets experience with 3–5 years of management experience.
  • Extensive loan structuring, credit analysis, and client origination experience.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Federal and State lending regulations, Bank policies, and the market‑based business community.
  • Strong sales, interpersonal, negotiation, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Detail‑oriented with strong time‑management and analytical capabilities.

  • Office‑based role with periodic telecommuting; requires a secure home office with reliable, cable or fiber internet.
Work Environment
  • Office setting; occasional travel within regional markets and across the broader Bank footprint.
  • Expectations for professionalism, punctuality, and adherence to Bank procedures.
Travel
  • Travel required within regional markets and across the Bank’s footprint to support client relationships and sales initiatives.
