As the Director, Risk Operations at Buildertrend, you’ll own the payments risk & operations function from end-to-end: merchant onboarding, underwriting, transaction monitoring, disputes, and policy. This is a senior, high-impact position responsible for payments performance, experience and scalability. It sits in the center of operations, risk, and revenue growth. Critically, we expect this leader to scale the function’s capacity through AI-assisted tooling and automation—not through linear headcount growth.

This role is equal parts strategy and execution – you will build, while setting the vision and strategy.

What you will do:

Lead all aspects of payments risk and operations including onboarding, underwriting, transaction monitoring, disputes, servicing, and portfolio management

Design risk policy that scales. Own the balance between risk mitigation and growth.

Build and operationalize fraud & loss prevention capabilities with clear feedback loops to drive continuous improvement

Define and execute the AI-assisted risk operations strategy. Evaluate, select, and deploy agentic fraud platforms (e.g., Sardine, Unit
21, Alloy, or similar) to scale operations through tooling, not headcount

Build a best-in-class risk and payments operations team Serve as the risk voice in product development - both customer UX (embedding controls into payment flows, onboarding journeys, and payout configurations) and risk tooling, API integrations & data pipelines.

Build out a risk analytics capability, both real-time operational metrics and strategic portfolio analytics.

Partner with Senior Manager, Compliance and GM to continuously refine risk appetite, loss thresholds and escalation frameworks and ensure risk policies align with regulatory requirements, sponsor bank expectations, and network rules.

Serve as the central accountability point for Payments Operations across Product Security, Compliance, Product Engineering, Revenue, Finance.

Who you are and what you need:7+ years of progressive risk management experience within vertical SaaS, marketplace, fintech or financial services.

Demonstrated success building AI-native decisioning systems that drive efficiency & better decisioning.

Deep expertise in payments, transaction monitoring, fraud detection.

Proven product experience – know the "how" to build the systems/integrations we need, not just the "what" we need.

Strong communication skills with the ability to influence leaders across technical and non-technical teams.
