Our Accountant provides support to management by tracking and analyzing financial activities including expenses, revenues, costs, and statistical data to inform decision‑making. This Accountant generates reports and conducts cost‑to‑budget analysis under the supervision of a senior team member or manager, serves as a liaison between financial operations and various departments, and ensures accurate recording of costs across lines of business. The role may assist in preparing the annual budget, detailed billing to government and commercial customers, and supporting financial planning efforts to optimize business performance.

Hybrid Work LocationEmployees residing in the Greater Madison, WI area (within 45 miles of WPS Headquarters – 1717 W. Broadway, Madison, WI) are expected to work in the office two days per week. Remote candidates from WI, IL, MN, or IA are considered; non‑local employees may be required to travel occasionally to our headquarters.
What We’re Looking For- Address questions and inquiries from internal operational departments and external vendors, ensuring timely and accurate responses and escalating to a senior team member when appropriate.
- Prepare general ledger entries from various sources, ensuring accurate record‑keeping and adherence to internal controls.
- Reconcile assigned accounts, resolve discrepancies promptly, and perform additional analysis as needed.
- Prepare cost allocations in compliance with WPS disclosed practices on a monthly basis.
- Use data extraction tools to pull relevant information from various sources into financial reporting templates, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of source data.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, financial reporting, expense and revenue management.
- Strong communication skills, capable of asking clear, targeted questions to obtain necessary information.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with technology applications in Finance.
- One or more years of experience in accounting, finance, or a related field – internships included.
- Experience with Deltek accounting software.
- High‑speed cable or fiber internet.
- Minimum 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream connection (verified via ).
