The Individual Income Tax Auditor 2 conducts routine to moderately-complex audits that are small to medium in scale, and research, analysis and review of individual income tax refund claims.

These responsibilities are completed using acceptable audit methods and procedures to ensure taxpayers are in compliance with Arizona tax law, rulings and case law. This role is also responsible for creating and maintaining monthly production charts on behalf of the unit, conducting research and working on special projects on behalf of senior team members and management, as assigned.

This position may be available for remote work within Arizona with 2-3 days in office per week following a full time in office 6 month training.

Job Duties
  • Tax Return Audit
    • Conduct routine to moderately‑complex audit and refund reviews involving accurate calculation and application of tax laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Accurately and timely examine audits based on correspondence with taxpayers and changes in calculations resulting from information provided.
    • Review returns, make determinations and corrections.
    • Elicit clarifying information, accept evidence, evaluate testimony in a written decision, and prepare case files as necessary.
    • Fully document audits to support the Department's position and maintain the audit file in an orderly manner.
    • Prepare audit reports and other reports.
    • Make adjustments to taxpayer accounts in the tax system and perform data cleanup, including accounts flagged for potential fraud.
    • Respond to and resolve inquiries received in tickets and email.
    • Attend and represent the Department at informal and formal court hearings requiring in‑state travel.
  • Research & Analysis
    • Review, research, and respond to taxpayer inquiries and emails.
    • Complete audit and refund reviews, conduct technical reviews of audit files including research and examination.
    • Conduct research on behalf of senior team members and management to create and maintain monthly production charts.
  • Agency/Department Compliance & Continuous Improvement
    • Remain current on all laws, regulations, policies, and best practices related to taxation through self‑directed research, conferences, subscriptions, and attendance at industry meetings.
    • Actively contribute to team and individual effectiveness through staff meetings, huddles, training, and participation in work teams.
    • Complete required training in a timely manner, participate in assigned work teams, and complete periodic metrics, projects, huddle boards, and reports as requested.
    • Prepare for and actively participate in 1:1 coaching with supervisor.
    • Maximize work processes and deliverables through lean principles within the Arizona Management System (AMS) and provide recommendations for process improvement.
    • Educate taxpayers about tax law, rules, and regulations and ensure taxpayer compliance through the audit process.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Basic knowledge of individual income tax policy and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable federal and state tax laws, statutes, and codes.
  • Basic knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Basic knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS).
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Strong mathematical computation skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, and averages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demeanor.
