The Senior Pharmacy Underwriting Consultant will ensure that UHC underwriting across all segments is, where appropriate, utilizing all margin retention and growth pricing strategies currently available as well as ensuring that our pricing strategies and capabilities are aligned with the market. The successful candidate will participate in the pricing activities of RFPs (Requests for Proposals) and will acquire a breadth of knowledge in all financial/operational aspects of our business.
The consultant will be responsible for all pharmacy pricing aspects including Retail, Mail, Specialty, Administrative fees if applicable and Rebate structure. You will work closely with National Accounts, Key Accounts and Public Sector underwriting to ensure financial execution is consistent and that E&I margin growth strategies are congruent with organizational strategies.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support overall effort to win new business and retain current clients
- Proactively ensure UHC pharmacy underwriting practices/strategies are current and position company favorably vs. Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) and carrier competition
- Coordinate and align underwriting pricing practices and strategies with our UW Employer & Individual (E&I) pharmacy partners, as well as with our PBM Optum Rx as appropriate
- Act as a pharmacy SME and engage in client/prospect specific renewals and RFP's
- Lead efforts to maintain and embellish pharmacy underwriting guidance, as well as keep current underwriter training initiatives via training conference calls, and in person educational seminars. Also participate in sales training efforts
- Present financial recommendations to senior management and collaborate in discussions between underwriting and sales leadership
- Coordinate proposal and guarantee document language with other impacted areas including Legal
- Track and report on pricing initiatives (new products/networks, tactics) on an as needed basis
- Participate in oversight committee working directly with Senior Actuarial, UHCP Finance, Sales and Underwriting Leaders
- Participate in pricing and contract negotiations with customers and their pharmacy consultants or brokers
- Sought out as an expert and serves as a leader/mentor

Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in healthcare finance setting: medical or pharmacy underwriting, finance, or employee benefit broker/consulting practice
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple work streams (e.g., RFPs, pricing analyses, contract reviews) with ≥ 98% on-time delivery
- Solid financial acumen, including experience analyzing budgets, pricing models, or financial results to support business decisions
- Intermediate (minimally) level of proficiency with MS Office suite
- Proven excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, at peer and management level
- Proven advanced Excel skills
- Proven solid collaborative skills, team player, self-starter
- Willing and able to travel 10% +/- depending on business need
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience with Risk Management
- Exposure to self-funded and/or pharmacy underwriting/financial management either with carrier or PBM
