Maine Savings Federal Credit Union has an opening for an experienced consumer loan underwriter. The role supports Loan Officers in building the loan portfolio and limits the Credit Union’s risk of losses by analyzing and verifying loan applications, evaluating risks, and making credit decisions within the underwriter’s authority or seeking approval for requests beyond that authority. Sound judgment and detailed analysis are required to ensure all documentation is compliant with regulations.
WhatYou'll Do
- Evaluate data and information to determine borrower’s financial strength and ability to repay the loan, reviewing credit reports, assets, and collateral to assess risk.
- Make loan application decisions and recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with Credit Union lending policies and protocols and maintain strong understanding of Loan Operating Systems.
- Prepare and send loan notices and documents as part of the application process.
- Analyze tax returns for self‑employed borrowers to confirm debt‑supporting income.
- Coach loan originators on credit worthiness and the application process where appropriate.
- Review all vendor‑related service reports, including appraisals, title work, verification of employment, and flood determinations.
- Extract and mine data for report preparation for leadership and execute tasks based on the information provided.
- Complete various operational functions of the centralized lending process, such as preparing documents for loan closing, obtaining electronic signatures, booking and funding the loan, and disbursing checks.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Schedule: Monday – Friday 8 am‑5 pm, with one late day on either Thursday or Friday (8 am‑6 pm). Saturday rotation every fifth Saturday 8:30 am‑4 pm. Schedules are subject to change based on business needs.
Experience: At least five years of similar or related experience.
Education: High school or GED required; associate’s degree or higher preferred.
Work Environment: Standard, modern, climate‑controlled office. Hybrid remote work may be allowed after training.
